Gene Wilder, the beloved actor who starred in a number of iconic films including Young Frankenstein and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, died today in his home in Stamford, Connecticut. He was 83.

His nephew Jordan Walker-Pearlman released a statement (via Variety) about Wilder's passing, saying his death was due to complications with Alzheimer's disease.

According to Walker-Pearlman, "the decision to wait until this time to disclose his condition wasn’t vanity, but more so that the countless young children that would smile or call out to him 'there’s Willy Wonka,' would not have to be then exposed to an adult referencing illness or trouble and causing delight to travel to worry, disappointment or confusion."

Wilder's film credits also include Blazing Saddles and The Producers, the latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination. He also received and Oscar nomination for his work on Young Frankenstein, which he co-wrote alongside Mel Brooks. He concluded his acting career in 2003 after earning an Emmy for his guest appearance as Mr. Stein in Will and Grace.
