Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 Sees Old Meet New

It's been a good long while since a Tony Hawk game ground into our lives, but while the latest title bearing that prefix arrived back in 2007, it's been over a decade since a Pro Skater game was released. Hard as it may seem to believe, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 was released way back in 2002, so you have to wonder if a sequel coming over 13 years later can possibly hope to be faithful to the name it revives. Thankfully after spending time with the game, it's clear Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 will build on its heritage where appropriate, while innovating where necessary.

There are three main changes to the way the game works. First up, the team have added the ability to push when you're playing - gone are the days of desperately jumping up and down to try and muster some speed. Holding down R2 causes you to push off, though you won't be able to achieve max speed this way. As you'd expect, this has also necessitated the creation of a brake ability, which can be found on L2.

Rise of The Tomb Raider is Old School, & That's Good

While hurtling Lara Croft into the slick, action-heavy world of the modern blockbuster made for a great new Tomb Raider experience back in 2013, fans of the original series certainly had some feedback for developer Crystal Dynamics. Tomb Raider, many argued, should be less about combat and more about the solo exploration of tombs; guns are fun, but so is clambering up an ancient aztec statue to reach a lever with a river rushing beneath you.

The developer has taken this feedback on board for Tomb Raider’s sequel, Rise of The Tomb Raider.  In an extended behind-closed-doors demo, I saw a game that gave players the option to move away from bloodshed, as well as one that had more of a focus on its namesake.

Star Wars: Battlefront Makes it Fun to Be Rebel Scum

In Star Wars: Battlefront, sometimes you’re the powerful Jedi, swinging a lightsaber and saving the day. And sometimes, well… Sometimes you’re the Rebel Scum, snuffed out before you can even let out a Wilhelm scream.

For me, today was the latter. It was awesome.

I played Battlefront's wave-based co-op mode, Survival, on the Tatooine map. For the demo, we were pitted against six waves of enemies. I'm told the final version will have 15. On some waves, the goal is simply to survive and destroy the incoming troopers. Other waves tasked us with defending dropped pods or something similar.

There's plenty to love about the game. The shooting feels smooth and accurate. The environments, weapons, and characters are beautifully rendered and animated. What really nailed the experience for me, though, was way Battlefront uses sounds. They turn Battlefront from a great shooter (I've played a lot of those) into a great Star Wars shooter (Not quite so many of these).

Oculus CEO Discusses Mac Support

Current Macbooks, along with any being designed at the moment, won't be able to support Oculus Rift technology, Oculus VR CEO Palmer Luckey said during an E3  in Los Angeles today.

"It's not going to work on any Macbook that exists or is known to exist in the near future," Luckey said during an IGN Live interview. "One of the things that we actually announced is that we're putting Mac support on hold for launch, and focusing on Windows. People have said, 'Why don't you support Macs? So many people have Macs." It's true. A lot of people have Apple hardware, especially in the laptop space. But the GPUs in those, they're not even close to what we're pushing for our recommended spec."

The Last Guardian Moved to PS4 Years Ago

The Last Guardian switched from a PlayStation 3 game to a PlayStation 4 title in 2012.

Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios, told IGN that The Last Guardian was running into technical problems on PlayStation 3 many years ago.

"Because of the limitation of the hardware performance, the team was doing their best ... but we knew — from a design standpoint — in order to run it on PS3, the team would have to make some compromises in terms of the number of characters and these things," Yoshida said.

But as Fumito Ueda and his team worked on The Last Guardian over the years, the PlayStation 4 started to come to fruition. Sony, Yoshida and Ueda then realized that the full potential of the adventure game could be realized if the title moved development to the newer home console.

Mad Max May Not Be Fury Road, But it’s Still a Fun Ride

Spare a thought for the team at Avalanche Software. Extended development time has seen its apocalyptic open-world game based off the iconic Aussie Road Warrior get its release delayed from an original 2014 target window to September 2015, thus leaving it a post-apocalyptic Mad Max game held to imposing post-Fury Road quality standards. Truly expectations around the franchise are at an all time high.

And there’s no escaping it, Mad Max’s vehicular combat feels somewhat reined in when experienced in the wake of the balletically ballistic car carnage that George Miller and his crew triumphantly delivered in the excellent Fury Road. Chrome-grilled goons on stilts and gimp-suited guitarists aboard hulking vessels that are ten per cent engine and 90 per cent subwoofer? Sadly you won’t find them here, or at least not in the build of the game that Avalanche is showing at E3 2015.

Sony is Funding Shenmue 3 Development

Sony is officially funding and helping with the development of the newly announced Shenmue III, Sony’s director of third party production Gio Corsi revealed at E3 2015 today.

“So, this

has been ask for ever since I've been at PlayStation,” Corsi  said during the PlayStation Live from E3 Stream. “And we met with Suzuki-san at GDC last year and we started the long road to try to figure out how we were going to get this thing made. And we said the only way this is going to happen is if the fans speak up, and we thought Kickstarter was the perfect place to do this.”

Sony showcased Shenmue III and revealed the game's crowdfunding campaign yesterday during its E3 press conferenceShenmue III was successfully funded on Kickstarter, smashing through its USD $2 million target less than nine hours after the campaign went live.

I Played Star Fox in an Actual Arwing (Replica)

A fleet of Arwings has scrambled to Nintendo’s E3 2015 booth. E3 attendees can sit in an Arwing (Fox’s classic polygonal ship) and play Star Fox Zero in a replica cockpit with mounted monitors, surround sound, and, of course, a Wii U GamePad.

Check out images of the Star Fox Zero Arwing display in the slideshow above. Swipe to see more images on mobile.

Star Fox Zero features a steep learning curve, since you have to track two screens (one on the GamePad, on on the TV), and aim with the motion sensors of the GamePad. You can read all about how Star Fox Zero plays in Jose's preview. The juggling act that is Star Fox Zero actually worked really well for this demo. If I was thrown into a real Arwing cockpit I would probably feel similarly out of sorts.

Fallout 4 Mod Support Detailed

Fallout 4 mod support will work similarly to what's possible in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, according to game director Todd Howard.

Speaking with IGN, Howard said Bethesda is planning for Fallout 4 to feature the same level of mod support as Skyrim. "So, just like Skyrim, there are mods that can break your game pretty wildly, and so we have some safety things on the console for that, but at the same time, we are going to let people break their game. Because we try heavily not to."

As for how mods will work with Fallout 4, Howard explained that players will actually "create another version of your save game." From there, you choose from the menu to play a modded game, so that way nothing terrible can happen to your main save if things break.

The Last Guardian Left Me Feeling Conflicted

When Sony took to the stage yesterday as part of its E3 2015, it had a clear game plan. Confident in the quality of so many of its titles, it decided to open the show with the game we've all heard about, yet weren't certain we'd see. By kicking off proceedings with The Last Guardian, Sony showed the audience it wasn't about to forget the promise it made when it revealed the game back in 2009. Even if we came away from the trailer not much clearer about plot or gameplay, it didn't matter. The Last Guardian is back. Trouble is, a day later and having seen more behind closed doors, the only thing that's crystalising about this reveal is it may not have been good enough.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force Is E3's Biggest Tease

Metroid is at E3 for the first time since 2009. But this isn’t a moody, exploration-based, alien-shooter. It’s a 3-on-3 soccer minigame called Blast Ball. This is (presumably) a small part of a game called Metroid Prime: Federation Force, which Nintendo is keeping very quiet about for now.

While ‘Metroid Prime’ is in the name, and the HUD overlay does resemble Prime’s first-person view, but that’s where the Metroid similarities end. For instance, the demo starts out with your character (who is a small humanoid in a space suit) leaping into a larger suit of power armor. Then the soccer game starts. Just like Metroid, right? Just kidding. You might have seen this game in action at the Nintendo World Championships (and if you haven’t, you can watch it below) so I’ll just tell you how it plays.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands Breaks Ubisoft's Open-World Mold

Ubisoft says Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands is the biggest, most reactive open-world game it’s ever made, which is saying something given the scale and interactivity of its Far Cry games – and I’m happy to report there wasn’t a single capturable tower in sight during the impressive co-op demo shown at E3 2015. The premise of ultra-elite military dudes going into enemy territory for off-the-books third-person shooter action couldn’t be much less imaginative, but when it comes to the actual open-world gameplay, Wildlands looks like it intends to break Ubisoft’s mold.

Watch the announcement trailer above.

Co-op shooters have emerged as a trend over the past year or two, but Ghost Recon: Wildlands (which has been in development for three years) takes a much different approach than the near-future military Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 or the sci-fi Halo 5: Guardians. Here, your team (or just you) are dropped into the wide-open Bolivian countryside, given a list of objectives that will weaken the alliance between the drug cartels and the corrupt government, and cut loose to do as much damage as possible by taking them on in any order you choose.

Uncharted 4's Extended E3 Demo Is Incredible

The Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End demo that Sony showcased at the end of its E3 2015 Press Conference was an absolute stunner. But that’s not all that Naughty Dog had to show from one of 2016’s most-anticipated games. During a behind closed doors demo, Uncharted’s creative director Neil Druckmann once again played through the demo, but continued on with another 10 minutes of incredible action, stunning visuals, impeccable details, and story mysteries.

Where the Press Conference ended with Drake grappling onto a truck and preparing himself for an impact with scaffolding, the demo I saw kept going. Nate crashed through the wood, and continued to be dragged through the water underneath him. He climbed up the rope just in time to begun being dragged through a stretch of mud. The attention to detail as Drake got increasingly messy as tried to regain control was incredible.

Nintendo's 2015 E3 Digital Event Review

The wrapper around Nintendo’s digital event delivered on the mandatory charm. Puppet Satoru Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Reggie Fils-Aime were perfectly bizarre (Fils-Aime’s fuzzy creation in particular might inspire nightmares), and hit all the right playful, quirky notes.

But there was more to the shtick, as Fils-Aime later explained - this year’s theme for Nintendo at E3 was ‘transformation’. Not long-term transformation - which would involve juicy details on Nintendo’s next console, its mobile future and broader vision - but transformation in its more immediate future. The resulting event was a fun and breezy - yet at heart, inessential -  direct focused entirely on upcoming games.

2 New Specialists Announced for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

Activision has announced two new playable Specialists for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s multiplayer.

If you need a reminder, each Specialist in Black Ops 3 has one unique power and one unique weapon. You can enter a match using one or the other -- not both.

Prophet was a member of the British Engineering Corps. He wields the Tempest, a lightning gun that zaps out from the primary target to other nearby enemies. It works well for room clearing or holding down a choke point.

His power, Glitch, allows him to relocate to where he was seconds ago. So, if someone is chasing you down from behind, you can instantly pop back behind your pursuer and turn the fight around.

Star Wars Fan Comic Tells Green Leader's Untold Tale

E3 2015: Guitar Hero Live: The Music Game for Millennials?

Freestyle Games creative director Jamie Jackson is showing me Guitar Hero Live's ambitious Guitar Hero TV mode, in which scores of frequently added music is curated for you based on your song preferences throughout the rest of the game. He's demoing a Premium Show – in this case, a three-song live concert set from an actual Pantera concert – riffing along to show off the note highway in the series reboot, as this is my first time seeing it in action. He pauses the gameplay to show me some of the things you can do in the menus, right from inside the song.

"It's our always-on, 24-hour playable music network," he begins to explain.

But I notice that the song doesn't stop. The music video keeps playing in the background, it's just that the note highway is gone while we poke around in the interface. I ask if you can actually pause the song proper – you know, in case the phone rings or someone knocks on the door. No, I'm told. Not in a Premium Show. Apparently the show must go on with or without you. Which makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever, especially when you consider that Premium Shows are always more than one song long.

The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes Revealed for 3DS

Nintendo has announced The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes, a co-op multiplayer adventure game for up to three players that's coming to 3DS in Fall 2015.

In a brief presentation, Zelda Producer Eiji Aonuma and Director Hiromasa Shikata gave an overview of how co-op will work in the new game.

The Zelda series has experimented with multiplayer gameplay in the past, but Nintendo wanted to make this iteration less focused around competition. "I wanted players to cooperatively enjoy more serious Zelda gameplay elements, like solving puzzles and going through dungeons," Shikata said.

The new footage shows off a totem mechanic, where Link can pick up his other two companions so they can stack up to reach higher places, activate switches, and hit weak points on taller enemies.

Rockstar Targets Cheaters in Grand Theft Auto: Online
