What Did Captain America Do Now?

Cap pays tribute to his new Hydra overlord.

The latest chapter of Captain America: Steve Rogers adds new wrinkles to a controversial plot twist.

rsz_1stl010462

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Captain America: Steve Rogers #3!

Cap's life took an even darker turn in this issue, which built on the recent reveal that our hero has supposedly been a deep cover Hydra agent since childhood. This time, Cap pledged his loyalty to Red Skull by crashing a Quinjet into a building and apparently killing both Dr. Erik Selvig and Baron Zemo.

Art by Jesus Saiz

Art by Jesus Saiz

Is there any redeeming Cap after such a heinous act? Perhaps. This issue ended with the reveal that Selvig is still alive and working with Cap.

image

It would seem that Cap staged those deaths in order to win Red Skull's trust, and that he's ultimately fighting against his new Hydra master. Does that make him a triple agent now? And how will his friends react when they see that wicked chest tat?

It's hard to say what Cap's endgame is right now, but expect his double life to only grow more complicated as the series begins tying into Civil War II in issue #4 next month.

Japan Focus Distracted Microsoft, Says Former Xbox Boss

"It’s the only market I’ve even been in where we had negative market share."

Ever since the launch of the original Xbox, Microsoft has struggled to gain a foothold in Japan, and according to former Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach, there wasn't much the company could have done differently to make a bigger splash in that market.

"It’s just a question of focus," Bach explained on the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered. "And it’s a question of where you have assets and where you don’t have assets. And we had no assets in Japan," he added, noting the company "didn’t have relationships with Japanese game developers" aside from "a few isolated ones" for games like Ninja Gaiden, which "were actually more popular in the West than they were in Japan."

Given the opportunity to go back in time and do things differently with the original Xbox, Bach said he would have done "just enough" to keep Microsoft engaged with what Japanese studios wanted to accomplish in the west, but "probably spent a little less time on it," saying, "it distracted us from things where we actually had an opportunity to make progress."

The former Xbox boss went on to note that "[Xbox] 360 was better, but [original] Xbox was really hard. I always tell people, it’s the only market I’ve even been in where we had negative market share."

For more on the history of Microsoft's gaming platform, including one of the other names the company was considering for Xbox 360, be sure to check out our full interview with Bach on IGN Unfiltered.

Stranger Things Creators Talk About Second Season

Stranger things may happen.

Stranger Things hasn't yet been commissioned for a second season by Netflix, but the show's creators do know what they'd do with it given the chance.

According to Variety, creators Matt and Ross Duffer were at the TCA press tour in Beverley Hills to talk about Stranger Things' "bigger mythology."

“We want it to feel like a big movie,” said Matt Duffer. “But there’s a bigger mythology, and there’s a lot of dangling threads at the end. We could explore it if Netflix wanted to continue.”

"It's about giving enough so the audience feels satisfied," said Ross Duffer.

However, the duo told Polygon that the passing of time throws a spanner in the works of any sequel, since the child actor cast are rapidly ageing.

"We end [the season] at Christmas," Matt Duffer said. "We can't pick up again in January. We'd have to skip a year or two because the kids will have grown. I mean, look at them now! We'd have to do it the Harry Potter way."

Stranger Things is Netflix's latest original, starring Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, and Finn Wolfhard. IGN's review of Season 1 says it's a "successful love letter to the 1980s work of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, and more."

Comic Book Reviews for July 27, 2016

Rom makes his grand return as Civil War II rages on.

Hopefully you've recovered from the Comic-Con blitz last week, because there are a lot of new comics to check out this week. DC delivered a host of new #1 issues, including Batgirl #1, Nightwing #1 and Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern corps #1. Marvel published the latest chapter of Civil War II and a wealth of new tie-ins to accompany it. Elsewhere, Dark Horse kicked off their Aliens vs. Judge Dredd vs. Predator crossover, IDW debuted their Rom revamp and Image released a stylish new issue of Jupiter's Legacy Vol. 2.

Scroll down to check out our reviews for these and various other new releases, and be sure to let us know your favorite books in the comments below.

Action Comics #960
STL010836

Written by Dan Jurgens | Drawn by Tyler Kirkham

DC Rebirth should have learned two lessons from Amazing Spider-Man’s thrice monthly Brand New Day era - one artist per arc and (to help out problem #1) shorter overall arcs. The first few issues of this new run of Action Comics had been unpredictable thrill rides, but this issue is just a big fat boot slamming down on the breaks. This story worked when you didn’t have time to think (it’s Doomsday, go!!), when the book threw twist after turn and “wha?” after “huh?” at you. Tyler Kirkham’s blockier art style visually slows the book down from Patrick Zircher’s lithe, zooming action and this issue’s story feels almost wholly unnecessary. So little in the plot actually progresses aside from some semi-interesting Wonder Woman stuff. Hopefully this arc can finish as well as it started, but this middle issue feels like it was thrown together just to stretch out the arc. - Levi

Final Score:

Batgirl #1
STL010752

Written by Hope Larson | Drawn by Rafael Albuquerque

The previous incarnation of Batgirl was fun, but there's something to be said for a new status quo and a change of scenery every so often. This relaunched series accomplishes both by taking Barbara Gordon out of Burnside and kicking off a new global journey of self-discovery and training. In terms of tone and style, the new Batgirl is still very reminiscent of the Stewart/Fletcher/Tarr run, though the new supporting cast and Japanese setting help spice things up. Hope Larson's characterization of the dynamic between Babs and her long-lost friend Kai is particularly charming. However, artist Rafael Albuquerque and colorist Dave McCaig are the real stars of the show. Albuquerque's dynamic style and McCaig's vibrant use of color make the most of the new setting and the wacky characters that Babs encounters. Albuquerque's scratchy, frenetic line-work generates a terrific sense of energy. So far, this series doesn't break any new ground in terms of storytelling, but it has plenty to offer Batgirl fans. -Jesse

Final Score:

Detective Comics #937
STL010845

Written by James Tynion IV | Drawn by Alvaro Martinez

“The Colony” isn’t nearly as cool of a name as “The Court of Owls” but in Detective Comics #937, we come to realize that they’re nearly as scary and in a whole different way. In this issue, Batman gets a chance to determine the extent of The Colony’s threat and their operation is alarmingly robust. Where an enemy like the Owls work in a horror genre, The Colony is more of a real life conspiracy concern, an elite army that’s disgustingly efficient at their job. Another point in the favor of this book, is that it doesn’t hit the same second month speed bump that so many of the other Rebirth books have. Namely, Alvaro Martinez is not the same artist as Eddy Barrows, but the two techniques are so similarly used in this series that there is almost no artist-change blues. By passing its second month with flying colors, Detective Comics is working its way up the Rebirth power rankings. –Levi

Final Score:

The Flash #3
STL010849

Written by Joshua Williamson | Drawn by Carmine Di Giandomenico

One of the more appealing aspects of DC's Rebirth is seeing creators tackle familiar characters in unique ways. Having already established Barry Allen as a self-taught speedster and a self described loner, writer Joshua Williamson continues to mine the other side of that track by utilizing a whole host of fleet-footed folks who need Barry's guidance. This allows for some great character play, from more page time with the ever scene-stealing August to a wonderful moment between Barry and a young girl struggling to control her new abilities. At times Williamson leans a bit hard on the inner monologuing, but his handle on Barry and who he aspires, and inspires, to be remains well formed. Carmine Di Giandomenico also continues his fast start (wink), again showcasing an excellent ability to convey kinetic movement. While there's the sense that it's yet to fully hit its stride, this remains one of Rebirth's more promising titles. -Jeff

Final Score:

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #1
STL010750

Written by Robert Venditti | Drawn by Rafa Sandoval

"Like Green Arrow, Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps proves that it's possible to completely revamp and refresh a comic without changing writers. DC Rebirth has served as exactly the fresh start Robert Venditti needed to refocus his Green Lantern run and course-correct the story of Hal Jordan. Things are looking up in a big way for this franchise." -Jesse

Final Score:

Harley Quinn #30
STL010863 (1)

Written by Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti | Drawn by Elsa Charretier

Technically this issue qualifies as a series finale, even if DC is relaunching Harley Quinn in a mere seven days. But if this were the final chapter from Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, it would serve as a satisfying conclusion. The writers abandon the overly scatterbrained pacing and plotting that's hindered the series of late. Here they focus on a singular conflict as Harley tries to juggle the demands of her day job with a desire to protect a neighborhood from the scourge of redevelopment. It reinforces Harley's new status as a champion of the common people and allows most of the book's supporting cast a chance to shine. The brief return of Poison Ivy is especially welcome (these two really need a team-up comic already). Guest artist Elsa Charretier makes for a pleasant surprise. Her cartoonish style is just reminiscent enough of Bruce Timm's work to hearken back to the classic Harley days. Were Charretier not headed over to marvel next, she'd be a great permanent addition to the Harley Quinn family. -Jesse

Final Score:

Nightwing #1
STL010754

Written by Tim Seeley | Drawn by Javi Fernandez

As great as it is to see Dick Grayson back in the black and blue costume, simply reverting him to the familiar Nightwing status quo might not be enough after the wild ride that was Grayson. Luckily, writer Tim Seeley isn't content with the old status quo. This issue explores Dick's new role as a globetrotting minion of the Parliament of Owls. The real success with this approach is that it allows Seeley to celebrate Dick's confident, swashbuckling side while also positioning him as a man unsure about his place in the world or the monumental task he's taken on. This issue spends a little too much time on Dick's farewells to the Bat-family (especially in light of the Rebirth issue), but Seeley certainly nails those key character dynamics. Meanwhile, Javi Fernandez brings a very dramatic look to the series. Fernandez's facial work can be wonky at times, by he captures all of the grace of Nightwing's battles and the menace of his new partner, Raptor. -Jesse

Final Score:

STL010758

Written by Dan Abnett | Drawn by Brett Booth

The Rebirth era of DC has had so many fireworks in its first few months, that it’s easy to forget that the whole thing began with the return of Wally West. The mystery that surrounds his disappearance and return looks to be the driving force behind this series in its early. To be honest, the issue winds up spinning its wheels in progressing that mystery, saving it all up for a fun last page reveal. But amidst a leisurely stroll of an issue, we get enough charming character/team moments and old school Easter Eggs to make this a pretty enjoyable issue. Brett Booth helps to sell the team dynamics, making us believe these characters really have a history together through some nice artistic body language. Titans #1 isn’t a debut issue that’s going to blow the doors off, but it’s certainly a pleasant one. –Levi

Final Score:

Wonder Woman #3
STL010863 (1)

Written by Greg Rucka | Drawn by Liam Sharp

So, if you’re a writer at DC who is not named Greg Rucka, you’re pretty jealous of Greg Rucka, aren’t you? The dude is working with perhaps the two best artists drawing for DC right now. Nicola Scott blew us away with her gorgeous scenes in the first issue of her story arc, and Liam Sharp has continued to up his game with each subsequent issue in his story arc. This level of detail was present in his first full issue, but it’s wasn’t quite as consistently draw-dropping throughout the whole story like Wonder Woman #3 is. The story features Cheetah and a pack of cat-like warriors in a winding maze of a forest. Sharp’s renders those warriors and the forest with a sinister gloom that rivals Scott’s serene beauty from the other story arc. The story is good and is getting more intriguing as it goes, but the art is on a whole other level.–Levi

The Best 4K HDR TVs for Your Xbox One S

The Xbox One S will support 4K and HDR but you’ll need a new TV to take advantage of these features. Here are your best options.

The Xbox One S is out August 2nd but in order to take advantage of all of its features, you’re going to need a compatible television. Microsoft’s mid-cycle refresh of the Xbox One may seem like a minor upgrade on paper, but the inclusion of HDR and 4K will make games and movies more immersive than ever. At least until Project Scorpio comes bearing VR support.

So before you head out and buy an Xbox One S, take a look at your current TV and decide if it's worth upgrading to get the most out of Microsoft’s new console. If you are upgrading your TV, here’s what you need to know to get the best Xbox One S experience.

What is HDR?

HDR stands for “high dynamic range” and has been used in the photography world for a long time. You may have noticed a “HDR” mode on your iPhone or Android, which helps capture more detail in dark or overly bright areas. HDR for televisions also aims to increase the level of realism and detail, but for video instead of still images.

With HDR, blacks will be deeper and darker and whites will be whiter. You’ll also get a wider range of colors with HDR to help reproduce subtle color differences. The goal of HDR is to provide a picture that’s more true to real life and while the effect is subtle, it’s noticeable when compared alongside non-HDR content.

HDR10 vs Dolby Vision

Here’s where HDR gets tricky - currently, there are two standards of HDR: HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Here’s what you need to know about each standard:

HDR10

HDR10 (aka HDR1000) is the open industry standard that has been adopted by TV manufacturers like Sony, LG, Samsung, Sharp and more. Movie studios behind HDR10 include 20th Century Fox, Netflix, Warner Brothers, Walt Disney and others. Every upcoming 4K capable Blu-ray player will support HDR10.

Dolby Vision

Dolby Vision is a proprietary standard created by Dolby and it promises some technical advantages over HDR10. Dolby Vision features 12-bit color depth vs HDR10’s 10-bit. Dolby’s standard also cranks out more nits of screen brightness than HDR10, which is great if you have a TV that can get that bright.

HDR10 vs. Dolby Vision: Which is better?

On a technical and theoretical level, Dolby Vision is superior. However, HDR10 wins by being the more widely adopted standard that doesn’t require specialized hardware. If you have the means to purchase a TV that supports Dolby Vision, you can do so without too much worry, as that TV will also be able to support HDR10. However, you’ll risk paying more for a Dolby Vision supported TV if that HDR format fails to get traction.

If all you want to do is to use your Xbox One S to its fullest potential, then a 4K HDR10 TV will be just fine, as there are no plans for the console to support Dolby Vision.

What 4K HDR TV should I buy?

LG 65EF9500 ($4,499)

If cost is no object, the LG 65EF9500 is one of the best 4K UHD TVs you can buy right now. PCMag says, “Once again, LG has produced an OLED display that offers the best picture you can buy.” The TV features an OLED display, which produces the blackest blacks and more vibrant colors than even a plasma TV could provide. It features great video processing and has a striking look with its 0.25-inch thin body. It also supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10, so your Xbox One S will work well with it, and you'll get the most out of any media that supports Dolby's proprietary technology.

71mHM0if8ML._SL1500_

Samsung UN65KS8000 ($2,799)

If you don’t drive a Bugatti and maybe want to feed your kids instead of blowing all your money on a TV, the Samsung UN65KS8000 is a great high-end choice. It supports HDR10, which will work great with the Xbox One S, and offers 4K resolution upscaling for all the 1080p content you’re likely still consuming. You’ll still get a gorgeous life-like picture, but just a tad less dynamic and eye popping as the LG.

91DMSSpzHwL._SL1500_

Vizio P Series ($1,000 - $3,799)

Vizio has long been known as a budget brand, but the Vizio P Series proves the company can stand with the best. The P Series offers outstanding picture quality and also features a unique Android tablet remote, plus it has Google Cast and smart TV features built in. However, it doesn't actually support Dolby Vision and HDR10 formats yet. Vizio plans to patch in support, so while the Xbox One S will conceivably pair perfectly with the Vizio P Series, you will be waiting on an update patch before it can take full advantage of all of the console's features.

4352209_sd

Samsung UN55KU6300 ($898)

If you’re on a budget, the Samsung UN55KU6300 is your best bet. It offers both 4K resolution and HDR10 support for your Xbox One S. You don’t get the flexibility of having Dolby Vision support, but if all you want to do is play games and watch Blu-ray movies in HDR, the UN55KU6300 will do just fine. You do give up some color reproduction and brightness for this budget set, but if you’re upgrading from an old 1080p TV, you’ll be blown away by its sharpness and colors.

Bad Moms Review

Share.

A week in the life of a suburban parent.

There is a scene early on in the new comedy Bad Moms, written and directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, where the trio of moms at the center of the film take a drunken trip to the grocery store. It is one of their early acts of defiance, of breaking away from the status quo. It is the moment where the R-rated comedy has a great opportunity to show just how raunchy and over-the-top it is willing to be. Sadly, the grocery store sequence is not terribly funny. It is a misstep from which the film does eventually recover, but which turns out to be one of the many moments that fails to live up to the film's comedic potential and which stops a good movie from being great.

Mila Kunis stars as Amy, a (part-time) working mom who married young and has two kids (Oona Laurence and Emjay Anthony) with her relatively lazy husband, Mike (David Walton). All Amy wants is some peace and quiet; some alone time when she doesn't have to do a homework project or make cookies for a PTA bake sale or avert some sort of work crisis for her boss, Dale (Clark Duke). After she finds her husband having an online affair, Amy boots him out and breaks bad with the help of single mom, Carla (Kathryn Hahn), and stay-at-home mother of four, Kiki (Kristen Bell).

Bad Moms is an entry in the slobs versus snobs genre with Amy and company taking on PTA President Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate) and her minions, Stacy (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Vicky (Annie Mumolo). The end goal is the PTA Presidency, currently held by Gwendolyn with an iron fist and hours-long meetings filled with souped-up PowerPoint presentations.

Although the drunken supermarket escapade may fall flat, there are plenty of other scenes that succeed, and nearly all of them feature Hahn's Carla, some sort of over-the-top discussion, and alcohol. When the trio of Hahn, Kunis, and Bell are all there—and given appropriately foolish material—they make Bad Moms sing.

As indicated though, all is not perfect. Part of the problem stems from Bad Moms' inability to make a decision about what sort of film it wants to be – does it want to operate in our world and offer real lessons about life and the difficulties of parenting, or does it want to operate in some magical world that only vaguely resembles ours? The movie constantly switches back-and-forth between the two, doing things like having a serious reconciliation attempt between Amy and Mike one moment and then deciding to play a therapy session, with Wanda Sykes appearing as their marriage counselor, entirely for laughs. The session is funny, but the constant shifting of gears is jarring.

Much better is Amy's search for new love and potentially finding it with a widowed father, Jessie (Jay Hernandez). The moments between the two characters, and with Amy getting help from Carla and Kiki for a night on the town, may be predictable, but the punch lines are funny and the actors sell it. The romance portion of the story, unfortunately, takes a backseat to other issues but when it's on screen it is wholly enjoyable.

To be clear, Kunis and company don't only manage to succeed with much of the comedy, they succeed with the more serious moments as well. Amy's speech prior to the PTA election does in fact highlight many of the difficulties with being a parent in this day and age and her argument about what it means to be a bad mom is wise, but those moments don't gel with some of the silliness that comes before and after.

Non-parents in the audience may very well take issue with the film's entire woe-is-me take on parenting, and there is certainly a case for that. Bad Moms is entirely about a group of upper-middle class individuals complaining that while they have so much, they want more and/or different. While the movie regularly is able to make the conversation about big, real things, there is an unshakable sense that some of their distress is self-manufactured and something that could be easily avoided with a modicum of care. That is, stress over doing your child's time-consuming homework can be deftly avoided by not doing your child's homework.

The Verdict

Bad Moms is not always as funny as it ought to be, nor is it always able to hit the serious moments at which it aims. What it is able to do is be relatively funny for much of its runtime. It offers a great cast who—even if they're playing the baddies—are likable and it has a bunch of solid cameos as well. The uneven tone is a problem, but it's something that everyone on screen does their best to overcome.

Destiny: The Collection Listed on Amazon

But what is it?

An Amazon listing for Destiny: The Collection has appeared.

Spotted by @lifelower on Twitter, the as-yet unannounced collection is available for pre-order on Amazon UK for £50. The listed release date is closer than you'd think - August 18 (well before the release date for upcoming expansion, Rise of Iron).

There's no description, nor even any image, so it looks like we'll have to wait on official word from Activision at the moment. When IGN learns more, you'll be the first to know.

Rise of Iron is set for release on September 20. Bungie has slowly been teasing images of the new gear you can expect to be acquiring.

New DC Entertainment President Confirmed as Geoff Johns

Johns continue to rise through the ranks.

Geoff Johns has been promoted to president and chief creative officer of DC Entertainment.

Early rumors have now been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, who say he holds these roles at the Warner Bros. division, and answers to Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment, president of Warner Bros. Consumer Products, and president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Johns was part of a DC Comics executive shuffle back in May, which saw him moved over to co-run a dedicated DC movies division with Jon Berg. THR says Johns received his new title when this promotion happened.

Previously, Johns was CCO of DC Entertainment, where he was involved in the development of The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. He has also had stints writing on the Justice League, Green Lantern, The Flash, and Justice Society of America comics.

Currently, Johns is working on Ben Affleck's standalone Batman movie, and it has been revealed he co-wrote the Wonder Woman screenplay.
