What We Saw from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at SDCC

The Marvel sequel looks like it will recapture the magic of the original bunch of a’holes.

James Gunn and his Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 cast took the stage for Marvel’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con in a very different position then they were in when the first movie made a splash at the annual geek-fest a couple of years back. Now the sequel to a huge pop culture hit, Guardians Vol. 2 is a far cry from the untried, unfamiliar bunch of a’holes they were not that long ago.

Aside from revealing Kurt Russell’s character (Ego!) and the fact that Sylvester Stallone does in fact have some kind of role in the film (as had been rumored), two clips were played for the Hall H crowd. The first was a full scene from the movie, which saw Michael Rooker’s Yondu and Rocket imprisoned by Yondu’s former allies, the misshapen space pirates the Ravagers. Those nasty characters also have Baby Groot, now free of his pot and wearing a tiny little Ravager uniform, and while one of the Ravagers asks his boss if he can kill Groot, the boss says no: “He’s too adorable,” he snarls.

And he is. Yondu and Rocket ask the mute Groot to retrieve a prototype weapon for them so they can escape, but Groot doesn’t quite seem to understand, as he keeps bringing a series of very off-the-base objects back to the duo (even dragging a desk in to the cell area at one point). But finally Rocket is able to communicate with his old partner (or is this the offspring of the original Groot?), and the weapon is delivered. Fans of the old Guardians comics will immediately recognize the device: It’s a mechanical version of Yondu’s Mohawk, which he puts on his head, breaks out of the jail, and immediately starts taking out Ravagers using the thing’s enhanced ability to control his deadly space arrow.

In a callback to the original film’s famous shot of the Guardians walking slo-mo style towards the camera, here we see Yondu, Rocket and Baby Groot doing the same, while scores of Ravagers are taken out by Yondu’s arrow. As the trio walks along a scaffold of some kind, we just see dead Ravagers falling around them in slow motion, all to the tune of another Awesome Mix song: “Come A Little Bit Closer.” It’s all very Guardians, very fun, and very Awesome.

The second piece was more of a sizzle reel, showing the Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax arguing while facing off against some kind of cosmic beast. Quick flashes also showed Sylvester Stallone getting in the face of Yondu, new characters like the antennae-blessed Mantis and the golden Ayesha, and Ego, an energy being in the form of Kurt Russell (!) who announces himself as Star-Lord’s dad. And who, by the way, is literally a planet with a face in the comics. Those Guardians!
