Life Is Strange to Become Live-Action TV Show

Arcadia Bae.

Legendary Entertainment and Square Enix have partnered to create a live-action Life Is Strange TV show for digital streaming services.

The show will be produced in conjunction with dj2 Entertainment, which has also had a hand in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

With a deal only recently completed, it's unclear when the show will arrive, or even what it will be about.

In an interview with IGN, Life Is Strange co-creator, Michel Koch talks about how Square Enix went to Legendary looking to "expand the universe" of Life is Strange.

However, it's not clear as yet whether that means adapting the existing first game season's branching story into a single linear narrative, or if this will be a separate plot in the same location.

In the press release for the announcement, Square Enix VP of European Marketing Jon Brooke implies that characters from the game will appear, saying the show will feature "a new version of Arcadia Bay and Blackwell Academy complete with our rich cast of realistic, believable characters and memorable events”.

However, Koch sounds less certain of an approach:

"Unfortunately since it's really the beginning of the creative process," he explains, "we cannot really say anything for sure. There are tonnes of possibilities that are being questioned right now [...] We need to see what kind of angle [Legendary] want[s] to tell. I think it was important for us in Life Is Strange that we were dealing with this teenage drama story, but at its heart it was much darker.

"We've seen with a lot of recent TV shows that TV is not only for entertainment but can bring much more deeper, darker meaning to the stories. I think there's a space for going in that direction, but it can also really work - depending on the angle, the characters and the part of the story - to go much softer and cheerier."

While the press release does mention a partnership with Koch's developer, Dontnod, it's also unclear how much input the game's creators will have on the show. "We don't know how much we will be involved in this," Koch admits, "but we know that there's enough material from the characters, the universe, the visuals, the references anyway to build something new and interesting. I think it's really exciting to see what other creators will be able to bring into this."

Dontnod has previously discussed a second season of Life Is Strange, and one thing that is clear is that this new take on the series will not affect the developer's intentions. "We don't think the TV show will have any impact on what we're doing, or what we're planning", says Koch. "But we cannot really talk more about that."

Not familiar with Life Is Strange, in an enormous coincidence, the first episode of the game series was recently made free for everyone, forever.

Joe Skrebels is IGN's UK News Editor, and it seems like all those slightly on-the-nose Twin Peaks references really worked for Dontnod. Congrats! Follow him on Twitter.
