Current Black Panther Comics Inspiring Upcoming Film

The director is especially inspired by Black Panther comic writer Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Panther comics have been an influence for Black Panther film director Ryan Coogler. Coates, MacArthur Genius and National Book Award winner for Between the World and Me, began writing for Blank Panther this year, bringing a new — and more diverse — insight to the Marvel universe.

"What [Coates] is doing with Panther is just incredible," Coogler told Vulture. "You can really see his background as a poet in some of the dialogue. And what Brian Stelfreeze is doing with the visuals in that book." It's an absolute inspiration for Coogler and co-screenwriter Joe Robert Cole, the director added.

Coates' story takes on T'Challas' struggle to embrace his role as the Black Panther, and ruler of Wakanda, as a new threat provokes an uprising.

During Marvel's San Diego Comic-Con 2016 panel, it was confirmed that Black Panther will begin filming in January. Additionally, producer Kevin Feige confirmed a bunch of cast members, including Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, and Danai Gurira as Okoye.

For Coogler, the best thing about Black Panther is that he's a superhero who doesn't see himself as a superhero. "He sees himself as a politician, as a leader in his country," Coogler said. "It just so happens that the country is a warrior-based nation where the leaders have to be warriors, as well, so sometimes he has to go fight."

The director is also drawing inspiration from things that are going on in the world right now — "in the political realm and how people deal with each other."

Black Panther is slated for debut on February 16, 2018.
