Today's Women of Marvel panel at Comic-Con was an energetic discussion of all the incredible contributions women have and will continue to make to the company's creative output. As if the announcement of several new comic lines was not exciting enough, the crowd roared when already announced panelists Content Development Director Sana Amanat, producer Judy Stephens, social media manager Adri Cowan, Marvel Live host Lorraine Cink, writer G. Willow Wilson, and costume designer Ann Foley were joined by three of the stars of Agents of SHIELD Chloe Bennet, Ming-Na Wen, and Elizabeth Henstridge.
The panel began with the announcement of this year's Cosplay Variant cover series, a continuation of last year's very popular series. Several covers were shown while panelists marveled (pardon the pun) at the fact that this fall will see Marvel publish 20 female-led comics including Captain Marvel, Kate Bishop's Hawkeye, The Mighty Thor (Jane Foster), and the All-New Wasp. Special note was also made of Moon Girl, who Amanat announced would soon become "the smartest person in the Marvel universe."
Also announced was a spinoff of Ta-Nehisi Coates' immensely popular Black Panther comic entitled Black Panther: World of Wakanda. The series will be co-written by Coates and Roxanne Gay and feature art by Afua Richardson. It will focus in particular on the women of Wakanda, including Black Panther's personal guards the Dora Milaje as well as they mysterious Zenzi.
Once the comics announcements were out of the way, the attention quickly turned to the TV stars in the room. We were shown costume design art for both Chloe Bennet's Daisy and Ming-Na Wen's Agent May. Costume designer Ann Foley hinted at big things to come for May, stating:
“I do believe that May is going to get a bit of an upgrade.”
The sketch we were shown had May in a leather outfit similar to the one she's worn for the show's previous three seasons. There did seem to be an extension on her boots, leading Wen to say:
“Apparently I’m going to get really long legs."
Costume designer Ann Foley quickly became the star of the show, as all three stars praised her work. Bennet in particular seemed quite excited to don Daisy's new outfit:
“It’s hard not to put on the Quake costume and not feel badass.”
The conversation then turned to Agent May's legendary throwdown with Agent 33 in "Face My Enemy" and that iconic silver dress.
“Ann said ‘Just trust me’, and of course we do now, but at that time it was still season 2 so we were still working on the trust thing. But then she and her amazing team put it on me and it was amazing, and I still had some trepidation about it...but it all just worked.”
Bennet called Ming-Na a "disco badass", with Foley remarking:
“You can fight in heels and a dress and still kick ass."
Foley was praised repeatedly for her work on the show and how it has helped each actress to embody their character in a way that has not always been typical for television or film.
“The thing I’m proudest of on the show is how the characters have evolved...you still recognize who they are, but there’s such a great change and such a great arc...I’m not trying to sexualize our women I’m trying to empower them.”
You can see a few more samples of the Cosplay Variant series, which will ship this fall, below. Agents of SHIELD returns for Season 4 on September 20th at 10pm on ABC.
