Spider-Man Faces Off Against an Army of Clones

Literally all of the clones.

Spider-Man has a long history with clones, but his deadliest challenge is yet to come. Today's Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends panel at Comic-Con promised an event that, in standard Dan Slott style, will put your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man through the ringer as never before with Dead No More: The Clone Conspiracy.

Dead No More kicks off in October, but before that we'll see Before Dead No More, a four-part series that begins with Amazing Spider-Man #16. The issue shows Peter uncomfortable with his new-found status as a billionaire, and when an accident occurs at one of his facilities he'll find out just how much responsibility comes with that much power.

Dan Slott could not attend the panel, but associate editor Devin Lewis relayed a message from the writer to the audience:

"No one is safe."

Before Dead No More will feature a new villain as well as a showdown between the new Electro and Prowler. Issue #18 will see the long-awaited return of Doctor Octopus, and Lewis described #19 as:

"The most heart-wrenching comic of 2016."

If that's just the set-up, then Dead No More promises to be one of the brutal challenges of Spider-Man's life. The Jackal will return with his most devious plot yet, with Doctor Octopus leading the charge for his army of clones.

Lewis made it clear that Slott has some very big plans for this event:

“[Dan Slott] wanted you to know that he’s taking clones back...It’s unbelievable. You’ve never seen a Spider-Man story with so many fan favorite villains...what happens when Dan Slott takes the Jackal and runs with him? You’re about to find out.”

In other Spidey news, Spider-Man 2099 will see a massive Civil War II tie-in beginning with issue #13. In the story, Spider-Man receives a warning from Ulysses concerning the Captain America of 2099, which leads to a Civil War of 2099. Writer Peter David promised a massive list of heroes and villains would appear, in particular Punisher 2099.

“For everyone who has very fond memories of 2099, you are going to want to be onboard for this”

David also let the fans in on a fun trivia fact, which is that Ulysses was originally named Homer.

"Thankfully they changed it and spared us all 6 months of Simpsons jokes."

Fans were also excited to get some Spider-Gwen news from writer Jason Latour. The Weapon of Choice story arc, which began with issue #9, will culminate with a battle between Gwen and Captain Stacy vs. Frank Castle.

Latour also teased a romance between Gwen and Miles Morales, and fans were shown the cover of Spider-Gwen issue #17 which evoked the iconic upside-down kiss from the first Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movie. As for what fans can expect beyond just the romance, Latour simply offered:

“A lot of dimension hopping, and a lot of corndogs."
