Netflix is planning to ramp up its output of Marvel television shows, aiming to have less downtime between seasons.
At the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour today, IGN spoke with Netflix head Ted Sarandos about the company's upcoming Marvel schedule. When asked whether or not we might see an increase from two Marvel seasons a year to even five, considering all the currently announced series, Sarandos said, "I doubt that we could produce at the quality that they produce at that speed. But we’re gonna try to make them quicker so we can get less downtime between them."
The Netflix boss went on to note that "the whole cast is called on for The Defenders, which changes the production schedule for the other shows."
When asked if the "whole cast" means The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) will appear in the series, he replied "Uh... stay tuned."
While this doesn't definitively confirm The Punisher will appear in The Defenders, Sarandos' comment makes it sound very likely the character introduced in Daredevil season 2 could be involved in the upcoming series.
As for what Netflix has locked down for the future of its Marvel plans, Sarandos said the company has "Luke Cage upcoming and then Iron Fist and then Defenders, and then we'll start slotting the second and third seasons of the shows that are upcoming," but they "haven’t gone beyond that yet."
Daredevil was confirmed for a third season during San Diego Comic-Con, while Jessica Jones was renewed for season 2 earlier this year.
