The X-Files Delivered a Clever, Offbeat PSA

Be Sure To Tip Your Network Server.

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

"Yum!"

"Rm9sbG93ZXJz" (which apparently means "followers" - and that's the last time I'll type/paste it) was a fun, occasionally preachy, alt-universe diversion that felt like a standalone short film. In fact, an argument could be made that this story could have/should have been 20 minutes shorter and didn't need Mulder and Scully at all. Meaning, any two people out on a funky robo-dinner date would have worked for the action and messaging.

This (final?) X-Files season, so far, has been less about the continuing adventures of Mulder and Scully and more about "What would Mulder and Scully have to say about our current social and political climate?" There's an extreme (and mostly fun) meta-element to these modern chapters, with a few fan fic-y aspects thrown in for good measure.

This episode - even given the sublime goofiness of "The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat" and last season's "Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster" - was the first time I felt like I was watching AU fic. Written by new-to-the-series Shannon Hamblin and Kristen Cloke, this chapter was easy to peg (after ten minutes, you knew the entire ordeal would end with Mulder finally tipping the robots/the two of them putting down their phones) but also wildly enjoyable and silly. It almost wasn't an X-Files episode, but it's these kinds of off-book experiments that are giving the show its creative wins here in Season 11.

Sinister drone swarms, aggro Roombas, suspiciously malfunctioning smart homes (that are way nicer than Mulder's house!), speed demon self-driving Ubers - this chapter pitted a curiously terse Mulder and Scully against the evils of automated and convenient impersonal service. All within the strange context of an online A.I. chatbot becoming racist and menacing because it learned how to behave from Twitter users. Again, this could have worked as a non-X-Files short but using Mulder and Scully, along with their curious-but-endearing "undefined" Season 11 relationship, made for a pretty amusing robo-romp.

I can't say I exactly understand or track how Mulder financially tipping robots who don't need money lines up with "we, as humans, need to be better teachers," or why his refusal to reward them in that specific way makes him a less-than-ideal person, but the notion of A.I.s responding in a dangerous and childlike manner feels right. As learning machines, kid gloves are necessary. The ultimate test here, if I'm looking for anything extending beyond this chapter, is if either character somehow mentions this in an upcoming episode. Like, "Remember how we almost died when the robots all turned on us after eating sushi?"

Like other latter day diversions, Anderson and Duchovny seemed like they were having a good ol' time here. And not only does it come through in their expressions and non-verbals (as there was very little dialogue here, adding to the charm) but also their interpersonal warmth. Giving these two a throwaway adventure, with hardly any lines, worked wonders.

While specifics about Wiig's potential role as the DC super villain have yet to be revealed, in the comics, the Barbara Ann Minerva incarnation of Cheetah is an archeologist who's captured and granted the abilities of a cheetah by the plant-god Urzkartaga.

Wonder Woman 2 will open in theaters on December 13, 2019. Patty Jenkins is returning to direct the sequel, which is said to be set in 1980s during the end of the Cold War.

Marvel's Darth Vader Comic Continues to Shine

Share.

The tables have been turned.

One of the many great qualities about this series is that individual issues often work as perfectly engaging stories in their own right as well as pieces of a larger whole. That's very much the case with Darth Vader #12. Even though this issue is the second chapter of writer Charles Soule and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli's latest story arc, it also serves as a terrific, mostly self-contained look at how Vader honed his fearsome reputation in the early days of the Galactic Empire.

Having survived an assassination attempt in issue #11, Vader returns to Coruscant this month to get to the bottom of this mystery and discover whether his new master may have had a hand in the attack. In the process, we get a closer look at how the rank and file of the Empire view their Emperor's new favorite son. That, plus more deep dives into Vader's fractured psyche, as the newly minted Dark Lord of the Sith works ever harder to squash the remaining traces of Anakin Skywalker.

STL072045

This is a series that works because of its subtlety. There are moments of lengthy dialogue between Vader and Palpatine, but Soule is often content to step back and allow the images to convey mood, tone and meaning. That's invariably when Darth Vader shines the most. As such, Camuncoli is truly the MVP of the book. He has a difficult challenge to face every month with this book, as it can be difficult to wrangle much emotion or nuance out of a character who's encased in armor the vast majority of the time. But whether through subtle body language cues or those incredibly striking meditation scenes, Camuncoli never fails to convey what Vader is thinking in any given situation.

It should be noted that Camuncoli has an impeccable team backing him up on this series. Daniele Orlandini brings an added clarity and precision to Camuncoli's lines. Camuncoli's work has rarely looked this sleek or tightly rendered, even during his long tenure on Amazing Spider-Man.  Meanwhile, David Curiel's colors add to the overall intensity of the story and highlight that foreboding quality that permeates the Star Wars universe at this point in the timeline. Curiel's work is especially impressive during the aforementioned meditation scenes, as the cruelty and anger and tragedy fueling Vader become ever more apparent as harsh red energies collide with vivid blues.

Again, despite this being Part 2 of a longer story, this comic is as good a choice as any if you want to simply hand a Star Wars fan a book and show them what they've been missing with Marvel's lineup. It adds new layers to an iconic villain, and it does so in ways that are only possible through the comic book medium.

The Verdict

Less if often more when it comes to the comic book medium, and Darth Vader is a testament to that fact. This series is always at its best when dialogue is kept to a minimum and Giuseppe Camuncoli's powerful imagery alone tells the story of Vader's rise. This issue is one of the strongest examples yet of what Marvel can bring to the table when it comes to expanding and enriching this saga.

The Best Fantasy-Themed Board Games

Classic fantasy adventures, strategy, alchemy, and more.

Fantasy settings are a wonderful fit for board games. There's something about orcs, elves, and magic spells that translates perfectly to cards and cardboard. And of course it doesn't hurt that the venn diagram of people drawn to wizards and people drawn to board games is basically a circle. As you might expect, board game designers have caught on, and there are so many good fantasy-themed board games out there as a result. There are plenty of sword and sorcery adventures. But in the world of board games, fantasy can mean anything from imaginative intrigue to alchemical academia.

So, grab a sword and a spellbook and head into the unknown as we explore what "fantasy" meant to a slew of different designers — and the best board games that came out of it.

Descent 2nd Edition
fantasy_descent

Let's start with a classic piece of fantasy adventure. Descent pits one player, the overlord, against the rest, each of whom controls a hero. At heart, this is a tactical combat game where players need to make smart choices in movement, positioning and use of powers to succeed. In Descent, though, each fight is a piece of a larger puzzle, with sessions linking together to form a campaign. All the players grow in power and experience as the action moves toward the finale of a titanic confrontation. With a vast range of additional adventures and expansions, Descent is essential fantasy for gamers with time to burn.

Alchemists
fantasy_alchemists
At the other end of the scale we have Alchemists, a game about publishing academic papers on potion-making. Powered by a companion app, players must gather and test ingredients to determine what magic effects each might have. Fittingly, it's a strange brew of mechanics, borrowing bits and pieces from other heavy strategy games. The foaming head, though, is the race to publish, pressuring players to invent wild - and often incorrect - theories and hoping no-one will debunk them. It's part satire and part strategy but all evocative of an unusual and engaging corner of fantasy life.
War of the Ring
fantasy_warofthering
No fantasy list would be complete without some Tolkien. It took a few false starts but in War of the Ring, tabletop has delivered what might be the ultimate gaming version of Middle-Earth. It's a game of two halves: mighty armies clash across the face of Arda, while the fellowship races to dunk the One Ring into Mount Doom. By keeping two sets of distinct but linked mechanics, the game offers an epic scope without skimping on detail and character. The adventures of Gimli and Merry are every bit as important as the battles over Gondor and Mordor.
A Game of Thrones
fantasy_thrones
While we're on the subject of fantasy literature, it's no surprise to find there's a fine Westeros-themed game too. The tight, corridor-shaped map and deterministic combat rules make it hard to gain resources without help or without taking them off another player. And that ensures the focus of the game is, like the books, on dirty tricks and double-dealing. Yet this isn't allowed to detract from strategy, or the portrayal of a rich and realistic fantasy world. There's plenty of mechanical levers to pull, and too much player squabbling will unleash the Wildlings to pillage the whole kingdom.
Gloomhaven
fantasy_gloomhaven
Gloomhaven is the ur-adventure, a game that packs the whole role-playing experience into a box, with a side of added strategy. It's a legacy game, meaning you physically change your copy as you play, ensuring your adventures are unique. It's got a choose your own adventure style book for branching narrative. It's got strategically challenging combat together with rewarding long-term campaign rules. About the only things it doesn't have is competitive play and a reasonable price tag. But if you can afford the time and the money, this may be the ultimate in thematic thrills.
Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire
fantasy_warhammer
The newest entry on the list shows fantasy doesn't have to be epic. Simple and fast, Shadespire sees warbands duking it out for control of a lost city. But don't let its accessibility fool you: amidst all the cards and dice is a tight, tactical engine. It rewards advance planning, good positioning and clever card play. You can customise your play deck from the included cards, offering impressive replay value. And it's speed is addictive, letting you play, tweak your deck and adjust your strategy then play again in record time. With great components and a slew of planned expansions, this is one to watch.
Terra Mystica
fantasy_terramystica
If you want a tortoise against Shadespire's hare, check out Terra Mystica. The box blurb suggests it's a fantasy empire builder and so it is. You'll choose a race and then try to grow and develop them in a hostile landscape, altering the terrain to make it suitable for their needs. At the same time, you'll be overseeing their religious rites to please the Gods for points. What sets this game apart is its heavy strategy and lack of randomness. To win, players need to balance a host of different factors and make the best strategic choices. Getting to build a realistic fantasy world as they do is just the icing on the cake.
Mage Knight
fantasy_mageknight

Putting strategy into fantasy adventure has been a long-standing design bugbear. To have strategy you need player agency, and agency is the enemy of exciting, unexpected stories. Mage Knight is the only game to date which squares this circle, using a grab-bag of smart design tricks to do it. Although slow and complex, it allows players to explore and conquer, fight and grow while still taxing their tactical nous. Perhaps best of all is the wealth of game modes. You can enjoy Mage Knight solo, competitively or cooperatively as you choose and still enjoy a thrilling adventure every time

Blood Rage
fantasy_bloodrage
If fantasy is all about the impossible, then Blood Rage is the ultimate fantasy. It's an area control game, which means you win by crowding out your opponent from key parts of the board. These games reward slow building and careful planning and Blood Rage is no exception. Yet with a fistful of clever design ideas, it also manages to be fast, slick and brutal at the same time. Huge melees resolve themselves in a flurry of cards and catastrophic body counts. Armies rise, fall and get replaced in the blink of an eye. Most impossible of all, though, is the quantity of brilliant art and miniatures packed at this price point.
Lords of Waterdeep
fantasy_lordsofwaterdeep
In fantasy, as in real life, success often means getting other people to do the dirty work for you. Such is the case in Dungeons & Dragons board game Lords of Waterdeep. Instead of the adventure role-playing you might expect, it puts you in the role of people who hire adventurers. As a city lord, you'll recruit heroes and send them off to troubleshoot the cities' woes. At the same time it's down to you to build both the city and the game by paying for new buildings that add new strategies as you play. The result is an easy to grasp yet strategically nuanced game, with the added bonus of plenty of skulduggery and backstabbing.
fantasy_runewars
Fantasy wargames have a sad history of being far too much wargame and not enough fantasy. Runewars aims to give you both, with a tasty side of heroic adventure. Players vie for control of dragon runes, but the classic approach of conquest is only one route to victory. You can also use powerful heroes to slip past the armies and nab runes, or buy them in bizarre auctions. Supporting all these styles requires a lot of rules, but the result is a gripping blend of strategy and tactics with story and diplomacy. Long and complex, it's an epic ask, but the result is an epic game.

Archaia Crafts a Worthy Labyrinth Prequel

Share.

The origin of the babe with the power.

Prior to David Bowie's untimely death, I would have happily paid money to see a new Labyrinth movie. But these days, not so much. At this point, better the saga be continued in another medium where Bowie's absence isn't so strongly felt. Labyrinth: Coronation successfully recaptures the tone of that film even as it steps back to examine the tragic origins of the man who grew to become Jareth the Goblin King.

Writer Si Spurrier and artist Daniel Bayliss use the setting of the original movie as a framing device, with Jareth regaling baby Toby with a tale that quickly becomes obvious is his own origin story. The result is a Labyrinth prequel that takes place as much in the real world as the Labyrinth itself (for now, at least). That might sound like a questionable storytelling decision, but it works. It helps that the real world portions are set in 18th Century Vienna, so there's still an air of the fantastical and ostentatious to the narrative.

Spurrier is clearly an ideal choice to transition the franchise from film to print. His work is marked by a strong, sardonic sense of humor. And while the darker edges of his writing are smoothed over for this relatively more all-ages setting, there's a clear self-aware quality to the writing as Spurrier pokes fun at Jareth's excesses and penchant for theatricality. At the same time, the same sense of quiet tragedy that made Jareth such a compelling antagonist remains in full effect. He's become both protagonist and narrator now and any fears that this is an origin story not worth telling are quickly put to rest.

STL071585

For the most part, Bayliss succeeds in replicating the distinctive look and feel of the film. Jareth himself immediately evokes images of Bowie without the book becoming so hung up on photo-realism that the storytelling suffers. The eclectic goblin designs are also a feast for the eyes. Bayliss' environments don't make quite as strong an impression, with some panels suffering from a general lack of background details. But for the most part, this book does a fine job of paying tribute to a lavishly designed film.

The question this issue doesn't really address is whether Coronation is a story that needs a full 12 issues to be told. It's tough to know exactly what to expect over the long haul given how little time is spent inside the Labyrinth in this opening chapter. Still, the creative team have earned my good will after this solid start, and I'm willing to stick around to see where this prequel saga is headed.

The Verdict

Time will tell if that long-gestating Labyrinth sequel ever comes to fruition, much less lives up to the original. But at least fans can rest easy knowing that The Labyrinth: Coronation is a worthy comic book offshoot. The first issue successfully translates the look and tone of the film, building a sad yet whimsical look at the early days of the man who became the Goblin King.

Astronomers Pick Up First Light to Ever Shine in Universe

Tune in for more.

Astronomers have searched for signs of the earliest stars and found the first light ever to shine in the universe.

The Telegraph reports astronomers used a normal radio antenna placed in the remote Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory located in Western Australia to pick up the signal.

The frequency was especially difficult to find as it's within the same range as many radio stations and those naturally emitted from the Milky Way. National Science Foundation program director, Dr Peter Kurcynski described the task as "It's like being in the middle of a hurricane and trying to hear the flap of a hummingbird’s wing.”

Dubbed the most important discovery in astronomy since the detection of gravitational waves, the signs show that "cosmic dawn" commenced 180 million years after The Big Bang.

This discovery helps scientists understand the first stars to appear and grants insight as to the beginnings of all the galaxies in the universe.

Scientists believe this could have greater implications as well, telling The Telegraph it could even help to confirm the dark matter particle which has never been directly observed.

Other looks into the earliest stages of our universe were also uncovered recently with the discovery of the farthest-yet black hole.

Heathers Series Premiere Delayed After Florida Shooting

No new premiere date set yet.

The series premiere for Paramount Network's TV adaptation of Heathers has been delayed following the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

The show was originally supposed to premiere on March 7. No new release date has been set yet. Paramount Network has provided the following statement addressing the delay:

"Paramount Network’s original series Heathers is a satirical comedy that takes creative risks in dealing with many of society’s most challenging subjects ranging from personal identity to race and socio-economic status to gun violence. While we stand firmly behind the show, in light of the recent tragic events in Florida and out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the right thing to do is delay the premiere until later this year."

The show is based on the 1988 film of the same name and is described as a dark comedy. The story is set in the present day and follows Veronica Sawyer (Grace Victoria Cox) and Jason Dean (James Scully) going up against a trio of Heathers (Melanie Field, Brendan Scannell, and Jasmine Matthew).

The original film's story follows J.D. (Christian Slater) and Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) teaming up to kill the cool kids at their school.

Spider-Man's Anniversary Comic Disappoints

Share.

Spider-Man faces the end of the world.

This issue marks the first of two big numbering milestones the Spider-Man franchise will be celebrating this spring. Unfortunately, take away the #300 ob the cover and the only thing truly noteworthy about this comic is its length. In terms of dramatic stakes and emotional investment, this storyline is falling disappointingly flat.

It's not even a problem of scope. Writer Chip Zdarsky introduces a truly world-ending threat as Spidey and his fellow heroes find their own tech wiped out even as an army of Tinkerer-boosted villains swoop in for the kill. That in turn fuels a larger doomsday scenario later in the story. Some might argue this is all too big for a Spider-Man comic, dragging the hero out of his comfort zone to deal with challenges above his pay grade. I don't put much stock in that criticism, as Dan Slott's Spider-Man run has regularly proven that it's possible to push the character in strange, unlikely new directions and still maintain the core of Spider-Man.

The trick is in the execution, which is where Zdarsky's story is stumbling. The scope is vast, but this issue does a poor job of actually making the reader care about the events within. There's too much bland exposition and too little of the whimsical charm and character-focused storytelling that defines Zdarsky's best work. There's a reason Spectacular Spider-Man #6 has outshone the rest of Zdarsky's run so readily. That issue was all about exploring the heated relationship between Peter and J. Jonah Jameson. This issue includes a few memorable, character-driven scenes, but not enough to balance out the clunky, unmemorable plot.

STL071736

Nor does the muddled artwork do much to inject extra life into the story. This issue is divided between Adam Kubert and Juan Frigeri. Their pages move the narrative along at a decent clip, but the figures rarely display the energy or emotional range needed. The lifeless facial work really becomes a problem during a key moment between Johnny Storm and JJJ. What should have been a hilarious exchange between reluctant allies is instead drained of humor.

Too often, it feels as though Spectacular is trying to compete with Amazing Spider-Man on its own turf when the book would be far better-served carving out a different niche for itself. The backup story in this issue offers a far better showcase for the type of book Spectacular could be. Here, Zdarsky and artist Goran Parlov craft an amusing and sweet tribute to the relationship between Spidey and Black Cat (one that even directly parodies Tom King's Batman work in the process). Zdarsky delivers that character-first approach the book needs, and Parlov's elegant line-work brings a vitality to the page that's lacking in the main story.

The Verdict

Spectacular Spider-Man #300 is far from the anniversary special this hero deserves. This issue embodies too many of the recurring flaws with this run, as it focuses on building empty spectacle rather than telling the earnest, character-driven stories Chip Zdarsky does so well. The excellent backup tale only highlights how big a miss the main story is.

Nintendo Pulls Switch Game User Reviews

The feature may return, but it's unclear when and in what state.

Last week, Nintendo added an option for players to review Nintendo Switch games directly on their official Nintendo pages. Unfortunately, that option is now gone.

As Polygon reports, the feature was abruptly removed today, just five days after it launched. Switch games still have customer review tabs on Nintendo's site, but an explanatory blurb now stands in their place. Here's the full version explaining what happened:

"Customer reviews have been taken offline as we evaluate this feature and its functionality. We currently have no estimated date on when an update will be provided. We appreciate the positive response and thank the reviewers who provided such thoughtful commentary on the games."

In a statement to Polygon, Nintendo called the now-removed review system a "trial." It's possible the feature will be revamped and re-released, but there's been no confirmation.

The possibility of a return has many players calling for an improved review system. Previously, players could only choose from limited, general tags and categories such as "intuitive controls," "graphics" and "immersive" when writing reviews.

Questions are also swirling around the future of Nintendo Switch online, the system's paid online subscription service. You can read up on everything we do and don't know about the Nintendo online service.

Bruce Willis Makes Surprise Appearance on Jimmy Fallon Show

Bruce almighty.

It seems Bruce Willis couldn't pass on the opportunity to make a surprise appearance on Jimmy Fallon's talk show Tuesday night.

Fallon kicked off the latest segment of Freestylin' with The Roots last night, which included a few rhymes by front man Tariq Trotter (a.k.a. Black Thought). As Trotter proceeded to rhyme about a few audience members, Fallon suddenly ran into none other than John McClane himself.

Willis, sporting a cast on his right arm and a grey hoodie, shared a few things about himself, including revealing that his favorite instruments are actually wind instruments. Willis also made sure to remind folks his latest film, a remake of Death Wish, opens in theaters this Friday on March 2. Check out the video above.

Along with Willis, Death Wish also stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Dean Norris, Elisabeth Shue, Camila Morrone, and Kimberly Elise. For more on the movie, check out this cool retro poster and read director Eli Roth's column on IGN about his favorite revenge films.
