"Secret" Silver Surfer Movie in the Works

The comics scribe is working on the "secret" Marvel screenplay for 20th Century Fox.

While the $52.4 billion merger/acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney lumbers forward like Galactus about to devour a planet, Fox's Marvel movie plans continue unabated -- for the moment, at least. And aside from various X-Men flicks in development, that also includes a "secret" Silver Surfer project that is being written by Saga and  Y: The Last Man writer/creator Brian K. Vaughan.

The Hollywood Reporter has this news in a story today about the unusual position that Fox execs find themselves in while they await the Disney acquisition. And while no other details were revealed regarding the Silver Surfer movie, it does make sense since we already knew that the studio was looking for ways to utilize their other non-X-Men Marvel characters, namely the Fantastic Four and that group's associated characters. Legion showrunner Noah Hawley had previously been reported to be working on a Doctor Doom movie. Both Doom and the Surfer are classic FF players.

Of course, the Surfer was previously seen on the big screen in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, where he was embodied by Doug Jones (and some CGI). Laurence Fishburne voiced the character in that film, which pretty much put the nail in that rendition of the FF. The team was rebooted in 2015 in the notorious bomb which starred Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Toby Kebbell as Doom.

In addition to the FF films, Fox also has a variety of X-Men projects in the works, including this summer's Deadpool 2 and the fall's X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Three other X-filims are planned for 2019, with three more after that. The New Mutants is undergoing reshoots this summer for a 2019 release, Channing Tatum's Gambit is still trying to nail down a director, and comics guru Brian Michael Bendis is reportedly writing a Kitty Pryde movie for Deadpool director Tim Miller.

How any of these projects will be affected by the merger remains to be seen, but for now a Fox exec tells THR, "We are going 100 miles per hour."
