Journalist, author, and Black Panther comics writer Ta-Nehisi Coates will write new Captain America comics.
Coates made the announcement in an essay for The Atlantic, in which he addresses why he's decided to write stories about Steve Rogers, the character's origins, and just how important Captain America has been to the world.
The new comic, part of Marvel Comics’ Fresh Start initiative, will feature the work of artist Leinil Yu with covers by Alex Ross. The first issue will launch on July 4.
"Rogers’s transformation into Captain America is underwritten by the military," Coates said. "But, perhaps haunted by his own roots in powerlessness, he is a dissident just as likely to be feuding with his superiors in civilian and military governance as he is to be fighting with the supervillain Red Skull."
Coates began writing Black Panther comics a couple years ago, and he will continue writing about the King of Wakanda. In fact, he'll be joined by artist Daniel Acuña for a new series about the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda, and the first issue comes out in May.
In related news, Peggy Carter is making her comic debut as Captain America in the new Exiles comic series.
