Writer Jeff Lemire | Artists Ivan Reis, Joe Prado | Cover Ivan Reis (DC Comics)
Marvel canceled their Fantastic Four series years ago, and in an unexpected move, DC is now offering their own spin on the quartet concept with a new series called The Terrifics. While not exactly direct analogues to each member of the F4, you can see how stretchy Plastic Man, hulking and malformed Metamorpho, phasing Phantom Girl, and scientific tinkerer Mister Terrific channel the same vibe.
Writer Jeff Lemire is known for crafting stories about family and teamwork that make you fall in love with obscure characters and then subsequently cry your eyes out when bad things befall them. Making you care and then making you hurt is pretty much Lemire’s MO. Given that family is the core value of any F4 story, he couldn’t be a better fit for The Terrifics. He’s teaming with Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, the wonder duo who have created some of the most dynamic and powerful superhero pages in recent memory, which is all the more reason to get hyped. If Marvel isn’t going to publish F4, then we’re totally onboard with DC’s version.
Writer Dan Abnett | Artist Lan Medina | Cover Nicola Scott
Mera made a brief appearance in last year’s Justice League movie, and with her profile about to get a serious boost in this year’s Aquaman movie, there’s little wonder why the folks at DC are giving the character a six-issue miniseries. The story features Mera acting as queen while trying to maintain peace during the Atlantean Civil War. Not making things easy for her is Aquaman’s brother Orm, better known as the villainous Ocean Master, who once again has eyes on the throne. With Dan Abnett guiding the ship on Aquaman’s solo series to great acclaim, we’re excited to see what he does with Mera when the story is focused squarely on her, especially given that he’s teaming up with Lan Medina, who is returning to the underwater kingdom after doing such a fantastic job on Aquaman and the Others.
Writer Simon Spurrier | Artist Daniel Bayliss | Cover Fiona Staples (BOOM! Studios)
When dealing with such a beloved and bizarre property, it calls for a beloved and bizarre writer, so who better to tackle a prequel to Jim Henson’s Labyrinth than Simon Spurrier? He has charmed our hearts and violated our brains in series like Legion and X-Men: X-Club, so now we’re ready for him to do the same with this story along with the energetic and emotive artwork of Daniel Bayliss. Here's how the solicitation pitches the story: “Before Sarah braved the Labyrinth to save her brother, another young woman sought to save a young boy named Jareth from the clutches of the Goblin King. The untold history of the Goblin King and the history of Jim Henson's Labyrinth. He wasn't always the Goblin King…”
