How to Watch the Call of Duty XP Key Note

All the latest news on Infinite Warfare, Modern Warfare Remastered, and more.

Activision is set to unveil a host of new information about this year's Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and much more at the Call of Duty XP 2016 fan event — and IGN has you covered if you can't attend.

Call of Duty XP runs from September 2 - 4, with a keynote on Friday, September 2 at 10 a.m. PT kicking off the event. The full event will also feature panels about the Call of Duty universe, the Call of Duty World League Championship, the world premiere of Infinite Warfare multiplayer, and more.

The event has sold out for those seeking to attend in person, and Activision provided the following statement to IGN:

"COD XP, the biggest Call of Duty fan event of the year, has sold out. All three tiers of tickets, including Veteran, Prestige and Enlisted, are no longer available. Activision wants to thank fans for their incredible support, and looks forward to celebrating the franchise alongside its players this weekend."

IGN will have those who can't attend covered with a stream, news, and more straight from the experience.

How to Watch Call of Duty XP

Come back to IGN.com to watch a livestream of the keynote on September 2 at 10 a.m. PT. IGN will continue to update throughout the event as more is revealed about the Call of Duty universe.

What to Expect from Call of Duty XP

COD XP will not only feature Call of Duty's competitive scene but a look at the various corners of the Call of Duty universe. Kicking off with the keynote, we expect the event will cover Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, Zombies in Spaceland, and more. The entire event will close with a concert on September 4 featuring Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa.

Infinite Warfare's multiplayer will also be shown off for the first time during the event.

Though Activision announced a Call of Duty cinematic universe at the end of last year, the publisher has remained quiet about plans for bringing the series to theaters, and a Call of Duty-focused event seems like a perfect opportunity to reveal what's in store.

Activision has announced panels occurring throughout the event, as well. For those attending, here's the schedule of planned talks:

  • Building the Zombies Universe — September 2 at 3:30 p.m. PT: A talk with Treyarch's Jason Blundell, director of Zombies, and Treyarch's lead writer Craig Houston about the Black Ops Zombies saga.
  • The Music of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare — September 2 at 5 p.m. PT: Infinity Ward audio director Stephen Miller, composer Sarah Scachner, and senior music manager and producer at Sony Jonathan Mayer explore the upcoming game's soundtrack. iam8bit recently revealed that the score and a 10-song soundtrack for Zombies in Spaceland will both be available for purchase on vinyl.
  • Creating the World of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare - Navy meets NASA Design — September 3 at 2 p.m. PT: Infinity Ward concept artists Aaron Beck and Thomas Szakolczay, as well as environment art lead John Dobbie, visual strategist Joby Harris, and spacecraft systems engineer Peter Meakin discuss the aesthetic choices behind Infinite Warfare and the game's real-life inspirations.
  • The Making of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered — September 3 at 3:30 p.m. PT: Raven Software's David Pellas, Infinity Ward's Mike Denny and Oscar Lopez, Beenox's Thomas Wilson, and Certain Affinity's David Mertz offer a look at the multi-studio remaster of the original Modern Warfare.'
  • Sledgehammer Games - The Seven Year Journey — September 3 at 5 p.m. PT: Sledgehammer's Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield offer a look at the developer's history, possibly set to "share some studio and game secrets, reveal undiscovered Easter eggs, and shed some light on mysterious past projects."
What We Already Know

Activision officially announced Infinite Warfare in May of this year, later revealing that Game of Thrones star Kit Harington will star as the game's villain. IGN had a chance to preview the game at E3, where we discovered Infinite Warfare's story is set to be much more like a World War II narrative than a pure science fiction one.

Modern Warfare Remastered was announced alongside Infinite Warfare. PS4 players will have a chance to play the remaster 30 days early ahead of Infinite Warfare's release. For more on the remaster, check out IGN's comparison of the original Modern Warfare and the upcoming updated version.

Stay tuned to IGN for more from Call of Duty XP.

A New Villain Emerges in Amazing Spider-Man #17

Can Spider-Man handle more enemies right now?

Life is growing more difficult for Peter Parker as the march towards The Clone Conspiracy continues.

rsz_stl013484

Warning: this article contains spoilers for The Amazing Spider-Man #17!

As you can see from the cover above, Amazing Spider-Man #17 marks the debut of the new, female Electro. This issue saw the Jackal attempt to recruit Max Dillon into his growing army of supervillain minions. As incentive, Jackal resurrected Francine, a woman whom Electro accidentally killed when his powers raged out of control. But when Jackal tried to restore Electro's powers, he accidentally empowered Francine instead. Thus, the new Electro was born.

Art by RB Silva. Marvel Comics.

Art by RB Silva. Marvel Comics.

To add injury to insult, Francine literally kissed Max to death in an attempt to gain more power. Turnabout is fair play, we suppose.

The old Electro wasn't the only famous Spider-Man character to die in this issue. The former Prowler, Hobie Brown, was tasked by Spidey to infiltrate Jackal's new U headquarters and uncover the company's secrets. He found plenty more than he bargained for, but Hobie wasn't able to escape before meeting the wrath of the all-new Electro.

image_2

The good news is that Hobie was quickly resurrected by jackal.. The bad news is that he's now a pawn for this decades-old Spider-Man villain. That's just one more hurdle for Peter Parker to overcome as the series builds towards the Clone Conspiracy crossover this fall.

Be sure to check out our review for The Amazing Spider-Man #17.

The Turing Test Review

Share.

An interesting, familiar world with one heck of a twist.

While The Turing Test generally walks an interesting if familiar line, it excels when it introduces some genuinely fresh ideas in its latter half. In the first, The Turing Test is a traditional first-person puzzler in which you navigate a series of rooms in a desolate research facility and solve a bunch of single-serving challenges, all while a questionable AI narrator guides you. It’s devoid of Portal’s incredible humor, but the writing and acting do a good job of posing interesting questions revolving around free will, what it means to be human, and of course, the artificial intelligence test from which this game draws its name.

The Turing Test also throws in an effective bit of environmental storytelling which has you parsing through personal items left behind by the researchers who formerly inhabited the Europa Space Station facility. I’m a sucker for learning about characters through this Gone Home-esque style of voyeurism, and The Turing Test handles it well. This adds a nice bit of personality to the seven-hour experience.

That said, the environments themselves always felt a bit too familiar and unremarkable. Like Portal, most of the chambers feel like antiseptic hospital rooms with splashes of colored lights to guide your eye towards an important piece of the puzzle. While none of this is necessarily bad, Europa Station never developed a sense of character in and of itself like Aperture Science did in Valve’s games when the facade fell.

All of these puzzle elements are familiar.

While none of The Turing Test’s puzzle elements are bad, they’re all familiar to anybody who’s played a modern first-person puzzle game. Mechanically, the goal of each of the 70-ish rooms in The Turing Test is powering up a specific number of batteries needed to open a door and progress into a new room. This is done by either physically moving power cubes from place to place or using your energy gun to transfer electricity from one spot to another. All of this is compounded by the slow trickle of familiar obstacles like moveable walkways, magnetic cranes, and elevating platforms. The arrangements of these are new, but their concepts are familiar and never made me think outside the box.

The Turing Test usually seems content with merely scratching the surface of an idea.

And unlike superb games like Portal or The Witness, its ideas are never stretched to their limits. The Turing Test usually seems content with merely scratching the surface of an idea or mechanic without really digging deeply into it. This was disappointing because The Turing Test shines when it combines many of its familiar elements into something new, and if fleshed out more these might’ve been right up there with some of the mechanics that Portal perfected.

Even as the number of variables in a given puzzle continued to grow throughout the campaign, I never really found myself overwhelmed in any given challenge, which actually disappointed me. I like my puzzle games to knock me around a bit and force me to really wrap my brain around its mechanics to figure out how to progress.

As they stand, challenges throughout most of The Turing Test are generally simplistic to mentally solve, but oftentimes devolve into mostly physically demanding tasks. I far too often found myself figuring out a solution quickly, only to have to go through the chore-like series of moves to actually navigate myself through it. This led to some pacing problems that had me sighing my way through a handful of puzzles. Instead of trigger those “aha!” moments that make a truly great puzzle game, it felt more like I was just going through the motions.

But while the first two-thirds of The Turing Test definitely fell into the been-there-done-that realm, there’s a super smart twist in the later on that flips the whole thing on its head. I won’t spoil it, but it the way it subverts expectations and marries the story and mechanics that had at that point become all too familiar is genuinely original and incredibly interesting. That moment and the challenges that followed made up for a few hours of ho-hum puzzle solving.

The Verdict

As someone who loves games like Portal and The Witness, The Turing Test definitely scratched that familiar puzzle itch, even if it fails to scratch more than the surface of most of its ideas. Its mechanics are solid but largely unoriginal, and its themes and world-building are genuinely great. And while it never reaches the originality and heights of its inspirations, it still manages to deliver an interesting world with one heck of a twist.

Renew Your PS Plus Before the Price Goes Up

PS Plus prices are about to go up for the first time in six years. The official price will go from $50 to $60 on September 22nd, but you can still buy a year at the original price until then. We've often seen sales on a year of PS Plus for around $40, but there are none right now, and I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see any until after the price hike.

My advice? Buy your next year now, and then if there are any sales between now and September 22nd (I'll post them), buy a second or third year to stave off having to pay for a $60 year subscription.
