Written by John Ostrander & Drawn by Gus Vasquez | DC
John Ostrander is basically the Chris Claremont of the Suicide Squad franchise. He might not have created the team, but he molded it into what it is today. This one-shot allows Ostrander to reconnect with Task Force X and pen a new adventure as these villains are dispatched o na politically sensitive mission overseas. This comic looks to offer the best of both worlds in combining Ostrander's classic, politically charged writing with the current, DC Rebirth-era incarnation of the team.
Written by Garth Ennis & Drawn by Carlos Ezquerra | Dark Horse
We're always wary of comics based on video games, so the prospect of a licensed comic inspired by a free-to-play, online tank shooter wouldn't normally capture our attention. However, this is one case where the creative team makes all the difference. Some of Garth Ennis' best work has been war-themed (Punisher: Born, Battlefields), so the simple fact that he's returning to that genre is enough to pique our interest. Besides, Ennis is someone we trust to bring his A-game regardless of subject matter.
Written by Rick Remender & Drawn by Sean Gordon Murphy | Image
We're thrilled that Sean Gordon Murphy has signed with DC and will be delivering plenty of Batman content in the years to come. Unfortunately, the catch is that we'll have to bid farewell to Murphy and Rick Remender's Tokyo Ghost for the foreseeable future. This issue will serve as a series finale as Debbie Decay and Davey Trauma have one final battle for the fate of their ravaged world. We just hope this isn't goodbye forever.
Written by Jody Houser & Matthew Dow Smith & Drawn by Chris Finoglio | IDW
IDW's newest X-Files comic certainly boasts a fun concept. X-Files Origins takes a Hardy Boys-style approach as it explores the teenage years of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. It doesn't appear that the two will be directly teaming up (IDW can't be violating continuity, after all), but the series will explore some of the formative events that shaped these two intrepid mystery solvers.
Written by Tom Taylor & Drawn by Marcio Takara | Marvel
All-New Wolverine is already Marvel's best current X-Men comic. How do you improve on a winning formula? Simple, add Spider-Gwen to the mix. This issue will chronicle the first team-up between Laura Kinney and Gwen Stacy. Plus, Gabby and her pet Wolverine Jonathan will be there to clean up whatever messes our heroines can't. Who needs the old-school Spider-Man/Wolverine team-up when we have this?
Written by Paul Allor, Kevin Eastman & Tom Waltz & Drawn by Damian Couceiro, Kevin Eastman & Bill Sienkiewicz | IDW
IDW has delivered plenty of mini-series and micro-series to accompany their ongoing TMNT comic. Why not consolidate those spinoff stories into one companion book? That's pretty much the thinking behind TMNT Universe, which promises to delve even deeper into IDW's TMNT world and its ever-growing cast of characters. This first issue will chronicle a reluctant team-up between the Turtles and Baxter Stockman. Even better, it'll include a backup story that pairs TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman with legendary artist Bill Sienkiewicz.
Written by Marguerite Bennett & Drawn by Elsa Charretier | DC
With this being a five-Wednesday month, DC is releasing the usual slate of annual issues to plug the gap before their DC Rebirth comics return next week. The most enticing of those annuals is this spinoff of the always entertaining DC Bombshells series. This issue shines a spotlight on Batgirl, exploring her origin story and her impact on the Bombshells universe. With regular writer Marguerite Bennett and rising star Else Charretier on board, this issue seems like a no-brainer for Bombshells fanatics.
Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa & Drawn by Francesco Francavilla | Archie
This zombie-infested revamp of the Archie universe doesn't come around nearly often enough for our tastes. But at least new issues ted to be worth the wait. This latest chapter offers a dark new take on Josie and the Pussycats, Based on the solicitation, it sounds like Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla will reveal that their lives were full of horrors even before the dead began to walk in Riverdale.
Written & Drawn by Various | Marvel
This trade paperback takes its name from the recent Secret Wars Too one-shot, which spoofed last year's big Marvel event and featured the very last Marvel story (for now) from writer Jonathan Hickman. But that's just one of several comics being collected here. This book also includes past comedy specials like Captain America: Who Won't Wield the Shield?, Shame Itself, Marvel Now What?! and Wha...Huh? It's always a pleasure to see Marvel's creators poke fun at themselves and the company and explore the lighter side of this superhero universe. You haven't truly lived until you've seen Doctor America: Cult Operative of Liberty do battle with the Crimson Euphemism and Bebe Rebeyonder.
