Marvel costume designer Judianna Makovsky is jumping over from working on the Captain America films to designing for the Guardians of the Galaxy. After working on The Winter Soldier and Civil War, Makovsky is taking over Vol. 2 from Guardians of the Galaxy's costume designer Alexandra Bryne (who worked on Doctor Strange, Thor, The Avengers and Age of Ultron).
Working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a team effort, and designing costumes for the films is no different. Makovsky already picked up the mantle from another designer when she worked on The Winter Soldier after Captain America: The First Avenger, but the new style of costumes made more sense as Steve Rogers jumped from the '40s to present day. Though Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 presumably won't have as significant a time jump, Makovsky still did get to put her own stamp on the characters' outfits.
"You learn what works and what doesn't work, and you hold onto the things that were really successful, and you change the things that weren't," she told IGN of the process of designing for a sequel. "The story changes. They're in different planets, they're in different places, they've added seven million more characters. You do definitely put your own stamp on it. In that one, we used, I think, four characters' [designs] that are from the first movie, but then we changed others, we created a new planet."
Makovsky -- who is also designing costumes for the next two Avengers films -- worked closely with director James Gunn to bring to life his vision for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.
"He has a certain sensibility of what he likes and what he doesn't," she said. "That's a challenge on all these films. You're taking things from other movies, but your directors have a vision of what they want, and how do you adapt all that to their world? It's interesting. With these films, you really have to be a team player. It's never about you."
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017. Marvel's Captain America: Civil War arrives on Digital HD, Digital 3D and Disney Movies Anywhere on September 2nd, and on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and on-demand on September 13th.
