The Incredibles 2 Is 'Going in a New Direction'

The sequel is slated for release in 2019.

Production on The Incredibles 2 is "actively moving," director Brad Bird announced.

Details on the sequel to Pixar's 2004 superhero film are still being kept secret—the film is still years away—but Bird confirmed that work on The Incredibles 2 is ongoing. "It's very actively moving, and we're excited about it," Bird told Entertainment Weekly. "[We're] trying to take it in some new directions."

The animated film will have the "same characters and feel," Bird added, again emphasizing the new direction. "I mean, that's the trick with a sequel. It's repeating yourself, without repeating yourself."

In an interview with IGN, Bird said he's looking to focus on the characters themselves rather than their superpowers. "Powers themselves are not that interesting, it's the people that are interesting and how they react to having those powers," Bird said. As for anything else on the film, we'll just have to wait and see.

The Incredibles 2 will open in theaters on June 21, 2019. Pixar president Jim Morris has said that The Incredibles 2 is among the last sequels for Pixar. Everything beyond that will be original, at least in Pixar's current plan.
