What's Actually Going On With No Man's Sky Refunds

The refund process explained.

This past weekend a rumour surfaced claiming Amazon, Sony, and Steam are all offering refunds for No Man’s Sky. While there’s some truth to the claim, none of the three companies are offering unconditional refunds.

First up we spoke to PlayStation UK’s customer support, who informed us consumers can request a refund, but there are a few caveats. Only people with in-game technical issues can request a refund, and you’ll be required to run through a list of troubleshooting options with the customer service representative before your case is passed over to the PlayStation investigation team, who will then decide if your case justifies a refund.

Next came Amazon UK, who didn’t want to go into the specifics as to what the criteria is for a refund, but did say the company was offering them on a case-by-case basis.

While both of these are specifically the UK branches of the two companies, policy is unlikely to differ too much globally.

As far as Steam refunds go, an orange box has appeared on the No Man’s Sky purchase page stating that the standard Steam refund policy applies.

Here’s the box text: “The standard Steam refund policy applies to No Man's Sky. There are no special exemptions available. Click here for more detail on the Steam refund policy.” You can learn more about Steam’s refund policy over on the official site.

If you’re hoping to return through Amazon, Sony, or Steam, your best bet to find out where you stand is to give them a call to discuss your options.

So there you have it; refunds are being granted, but the process isn’t as straightforward as previously reported.

In our review of No Man’s Sky, we said Hello Games’ exploration game has a “sci-fi spectacle of strange new worlds on its side, but not much else,” before awarding it a 6.
