It's the time of year when most NFL teams are narrowing their focus to one thing: the opening of the 2016-2017 football season. However, the Tennessee Titans, who play their first game Sunday, September 11, are giving themselves room to focus on another brutal competition: Super Smash Bros.
The N64 classic that started it all has become an obsession of the team, according to an article from The Ringer.
"On any given day, four Titans players can be found playing the game," the article states. Behind each smashing Titan stand teammates, waiting for next.
The impetus for the Tennessee Smashfest came when summer renovations of the team's training facility saw the removal of TVs and PlayStations from the locker room. That's when 2014 first-round draft pick Taylor Lewan brought in his Nintendo 64 and set it up.
Lewan bought the N64 while still at college at Michigan. The Ringer writes teammate Beau Brinkley "freaked out at the sight."
"This was what I got for my birthday when I was 10," he said.
"I mean, it’s a classic console," Brinkley told The Ringer, claiming any time there's a spare 10 minutes, teammates will squeeze in a game of Smash.
The original N64 roster looks downright quaint compared to the sprawling roster of characters available in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Bayonetta and Corrin joined the Smash roster back in February, bringing the total number of playable characters up to 58.
