Don't Breathe Topples Suicide Squad at the Box Office

Earning more than double its production budget.

Sony's new horror film Don't Breathe had an incredibly successful opening weekend, debuting in first place at the domestic box office with $26.1 million.

As noted by Variety, the film has already earned more than double its $10 million production budget and dethroned Suicide Squad, as Warner Bros.' comic book flick slipped to second place with $12.1 million after holding the top spot for three weeks in a row.

"This film is going to be a big moneymaker for us," Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer said of Don't Breathe's successful opening weekend. "We knew we had something special here. This is a film that’s all about keeping people jumping out of their seats and holding on to the person next to them."

This weekend also brought with it the debut Mechanic: Resurrection, Lionsgate's sequel to the 2011 action movie The Mechanic. The film, which stars Jason Statham as an assassin who's pulled out of retirement, wasn't able to match the success of its predecessor's $11.4 million opening weekend, placing fifth with $7.5 million.

Meanwhile, Kubo and the Two Strings moved up to third place this week, with Travis Knight's new stop-motion fantasy earning $7.9 million during its second weekend, and Sausage Party slipped from second place to fourth, earning $7.7 million.
