Spoilers ahead for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
The decision to cast Kurt Russell as Star-Lord's father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was actually the idea of Chris Pratt, director James Gunn has revealed.
In an interview with Empire, Gunn said, Russell "was actually not in my head initially." Instead, it was the Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) actor who suggested he bring Russell on board to play Ego the Living Planet.
Gunn went on to note that he "would have been really disappointed" if Russell turned down the offer, adding, "if you have to cast anything, Kurt’s a pretty good way to go."
In addition, Pratt spoke the complex relationship between Star-Lord and Ego that will be depicted in Gunn's upcoming sequel, as the two must "endure the realities of being in a family." After searching for his father for so long, Pratt said his character will finally "discover if that person lives up to the expectations he has in his head."
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in theaters on May 5, 2017. For a sneak peek at Ego's big-screen debut, check out Russell's costume.
