Parks and Recreation co-creator Michael Schur and actress Rashida Jones have written an episode of Black Mirror: Season 3, it was announced today at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour.
Black Mirror creator and executive producer Charlie Brooker discussed how the two got involved in the show, saying "they were fans of the show and the feeling was mutual."
The episode Schur and Jones wrote is titled "Nosedive," which is being directed by Joe Wright and stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Alice Eve. While Brooker didn't share too many plot specifics in favor of keeping it a surprise, he did say the episode is "a social satire" that's "about kind of identity in the social media age."
Annabel Jones, who's also an executive producer on Black Mirror, chimed in to add, "it’s about identity and social identity," before Brooker followed up by saying it's also about "how we present ourselves," noting "it's quite a playful episode in a lot of ways, but it’s also quite nightmare-ish."
Brooker also acknowledge the massive success that is Pokemon Go, saying that while they "do have a video game episode coming," it won't be based on Niantic Labs' new creature-collecting phenomenon. Even if they'd known about Pokemon Go's popularity while they were making Season 3, he said they probably wouldn't have made an episode about the game because "in 18 months time the world will look completely different again."
With regard to what fans can expect from Black Mirror's third season, Brooker said, "some of the ideas are wackier, in a way," noting that they "were aware that the rate of progress that’s happening in the world [and] you kind of have to go two steps forward to stay ahead."
Black Mirror: Season 3 will make its Netflix debut on October 21.
