Star Trek showrunner Bryan Fuller didn't just want to be a TV show writer—he wanted to be a Star Trek writer. Working on CBS All Access' new Star Trek television show is everything he's ever wanted, according to the man who will be showrunning the series.
"To be able to craft a new iteration of the show with new characters and a whole new adventure and whole new way of telling stories that you haven't been able to tell on Star Trek is honorable and it's a dream come true," Fuller told Collider. "It's hard to articulate that."
He revealed that the arc of the first season is written, "or arced out," with the first six episodes "entirely broken" in the writer's room. The episodes aren't one-offs; Fuller said the first season will have one story told over 13 episodes.
"And there are 762 episodes of Star Trek television, so over six episodes we have to tell stories differently than they've been told for 50 years," he added.
One thing Fuller reveres with Star Trek is its progressiveness; he's continuing that by looking at his show's roles "through a colorblind prism and gender-blind prism." Casting is ongoing and interesting process, Fuller said, and he's already found a few actors he likes, though he didn't name names.
Fuller expects to release more details around Comic-Con. Shortly after, in September, Star Trek will start filming in Toronto.
Paramount Pictures' Star Trek Beyond—which is not connected to the television show—hits theaters on July 22.
