Finding Dory held strong in first place at the box office this weekend while Independence Day: Resurgence debuted in second with an underwhelming $41.6 million.
Disney and Pixar's record-breaking animated feature earned an impressive $73.2 million. The movie saw a 46 percent decline compared to last week's figure, which, as Variety points out, makes for the best second weekend for an animated film ever and the eighth-highest across the board.
Meanwhile, Independence Day: Resurgence performed 20 percent below expectations, falling far short of its $165 million budget. That said, the sequel did manage to top the international charts, so Fox remains hopeful. "There's still about 30 percent of the international footprint to go, so at the end of the day, this popcorn tentpole will be in good shape," Fox's Chris Aronson said (via THR).
This weekend also brought with it the debut of the new shark thriller The Shallows, which exceeded expectations and nearly made back the entirety of its $17 million budget. The film earned $16.7 million and placed fourth, just behind Central Intelligence's $18.4 million weekend haul.
Free State of Jones, the new Civil War drama starring Matthew McConaughey, didn't enjoy the same level of success, underperforming with just $7.8 million.
