While no real mention was made on Smackdown regarding Roman's 30 day suspension, it was time to address the Romaphant in the Room on RAW and actually talk openly about why "The Guy" was no longer around. With all of it sort of becoming an unintentional Roast 'o Reigns in the process, as Roman's "mistake" was called out over and over, along with his lack of ability to get over with the fans. They even threw his "I Own It" tweet up on the 'Tron for Rollins to mock. It was pretty surprising actually, even though there was really no way to stall for a month and not bring it up.
Making things even worse for Roman, overall though, was the fact that both Styles and Cena came out and wanted in on the Battleground match - instantly, and hypothetically, making the Battleground main event more exciting. Because look, I was excited about the triple threat because it was ALL Shield, not because Roman was in it. He just came with the package, so there was definitely room to goose it up if they decided to drop Roman from the bill. But they're not. As far as we can tell, he's going to sit out June and then show up to fight at the PPV since it occurs days after he'd return from his exile.
Some folks last week thought the suspension might be a work because A: It's wrestling, and B: the timing of Battleground - but it's not. It's a real and true shot in the balls for Roman. It's just that, fortuitously, WWE's still able to keep their Battleground main event intact. And hey - they get to take Roman, the least engaging guy, out of the build for the PPV, kind of like how they did it for WrestleMania. Keep him off screen while the actual charismatic people do the work.
No, Cena and Styles didn't get into the Battleground match. Predictably, they both cost each other their respective shots, but that wasn't the biggest news of the night - though it was the biggest news of a rather snoozy RAW. No, the most notable item last night wasn't anything formally announced on screen. It was all the speculation that got drummed up by the WWE now referring to Ambrose's title as the WWE Championship. Yes, the words "World Heavyweight" have been dropped. Meaning... a new world title for SmackDown? Probably. Maybe. I mean, I can't see anyway else around it.
Now, when I get right down to it, I'm against two world titles. But in the case of a Brand Split, it's a necessary evil, though that may be too harsh a term to use. I just like the aesthetic of one world belt, but I do like all the opportunity the World Heavyweight title gave so many other guys - like Edge, Undertaker, Batista, and more. Another world belt means more superstars can be elevated. It means a second set of guys main eventing on their own PPVs. It's probably how we'll wind up with Styles as a world champ and Cena as a *shudder/convulse/vomit* 16-time world champ.
Now, do we need to go back to two sets of tag belts too? Do we even need a second Women's title? Ugh, I'm cutting too far ahead in line here. I'm thinking too much. But yeah, that's what all the hubbub was last night. The way Cole and the others referred to the title. By the way, when I mention two separate Women's titles I of course mean that Sasha would be holding them both. DER!
Speaking of the Brand Split, it looks like the great Kurt Angle return won't be happening just yet, depite initial rumors that he'd be one of the old guys coming back. Still, WWE is contacting a bunch of old names while also looking at NXT. Yes, there's a good chance NXT may be in need of a serious replenishment because guys like Balor, Joe, Aries, Roode, Gable and Jordan, and more might get the call up. And - well - that's the show! That's practically the entire promotion at this point so it'll be interesting, and a little nerve-racking, to see what actually goes down.
Oh, and we do more or less have confirmation on the separate brand PPVs. With SummerSlam being both brands, then Backlash being SD, Clash of Champions being RAW (yes, Clash - awesome!), No Mercy is SD, Hell in a Cell is RAW, Survivor Series is both, TLC is SD, and Roadblock is RAW. And that takes us through to the Rumble, I believe. And so round we go again. Then, now, forever, the entire cosmos collapses on itself.
