Warning: Full spoilers for the October 20th Legends of Tomorrow episode, “The Justice Society of America,” below.
This week’s Legends of Tomorrow introduced the Justice Society – while also killing off one of that famous team’s members. On the heels of that event, along with Nathan Heyward's near-death experience, Legends executive producer Marc Guggenheim spoke to press about what’s to come in the series, including the status of Rip Hunter, Nate's future and more.
Asked how Legends of Tomorrow might still keep the Justice Society in play, it was noted that it didn’t seem viable to have the team keep going back to 1942, to which Guggenheim replied, “You're absolutely correct.”
Added the EP, “I don't want to spoil too much. I will say that we do go back to 1987 and we'll meet a much older version of Obsidian, who is going to be played by Lance Henriksen. That's one way. And then we have another device up our sleeves that I don't want to spoil because it deals with stuff that is based in the back half of the year.”
“The Justice Society of America” introduced JSA member Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), who we know is sticking around on Legends of Tomorrow as a new series regular. How will she become more involved with the Legends?
Said Guggenheim, “We'll deal with it very directly in episode 203. We pretty much pick up 203 facing that issue head on. I think you have a clue to it in Rex's final words to her… If you're Vixen and you've got Rex Tyler dying in your arms and you hear the words ‘time traveler,’ who would you think is responsible?"
Rip Hunter has vanished, but right now, the team doesn’t seem to be actively looking for him.
Explained Guggenheim, “That’s going to be something that's always going on in the background, and in some cases, the foreground of the various episodes. We don't want to change the mission statement to fixing aberrations to going and saving Rip. But the bat's sort of been taken out of their hands in the sense that there's no way to find Rip. What would they do? Even if they said like, okay, priority number one is finding Rip, I don't know how they would go about it given the nature of Rip's disappearance.”
That being said, when it came to where Rip is, Guggenheim revealed, “You will find out before the Legends do.”
If you are assuming that the manner in which Nathan Heywood was saved in this episode could lead into him becoming his comic book alter ego, Citizen Steel… you’re on to something.
Said Guggenheim “I think one of the reasons we wanted to bring the character Nate into the show was that we wanted to play with something that Flash got a lot a chance to really play with in Season 1, which is the fun of telling an origin story for a hero. In the evolution of a hero, there's all these sort of fun seminal moments that we want to put our Legends spin on and part of that in discovering you have powers, part of it is learning how to control those powers, part of it is the first time you go out in costume, the first time you fail…. the first time you realize you have a weakness. We want to be able to tell all those different kinds of stories and you can safely assume that the reason we brought in Nate was so that we can tell those kinds of stories, including the unpredictable nature of his powers. I think the next episode, 203, really sort of shows how difficult it is for Nate to get his powers under control.”
With Rip gone, Sara Lance was named the new leader of the team in episode 202, and Guggenheim remarked, “Sometimes you come up with a character journey for the season and sometimes they work out better than you ever expected and there's other times that are worse than you ever expected… He then fake coughed “Sara” to indicate the former and “Kendra and Ray,” to indicate a storyline/pairing that didn’t work.
He added, “I gotta give a lot of props to Caity Lotz. As you start to see her become more and more comfortable with being the leader of this rag tag group, it's so much fun to watch her. The character is embodying the role of a leader and Caity's performance really embraces it. It turns out to be one of the most successful things we've done in Season 2. I'm super excited about it.”
We’ve known since this summer that the Legends would be facing a version of the Legion of Doom comprised of Reverse-Flash, Damien Darhk, Captain Cold and Malcolm Merlyn, but so far, only Reverse-Flash and Damien have appeared this season.
Guggenheim revealed that Malcolm Merlyn would show up in episode 208 of the show and pressed for more info, added, with a laugh, “You'll see Wentworth Miller back [as Captain Cold] also in Legends midseason finale, episode 208. I feel like that's enough! I've spoiled enough stuff. I've got to hold something back!”
