The upcoming Harry Potter spinoff prequel, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, is on track to have the lowest opening weekend of the Harry Potter film franchise.
Variety reports that Fantastic Beasts will take in $75 million in its first weekend next month. That number pales in comparison to what the most recent entries in the franchise made on their respective opening weekends. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 had a $169.2 million opening, while the Deathly Hallows Part 1’s first weekend box office was a little over $125 million (unadjusted for inflation).
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix currently ranks as the lowest opener in the series, originally debuting with $77 million (unadjusted).
Fantastic Beasts’ comparatively low opening box office might be contributed to the five-year absence since the last Harry Potter film, and the fact that none of the franchise’s three main leads — Harry, Ron, and Hermione — are known to make an appearance in the spinoff.
Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling are currently planning to make five films in the Fantastic Beasts series.
The first film in the now five-part series arrives November 18. Before then, check out 11 things IGN learned on the Fantastic Beasts set, and the movie’s posters.
