Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows had a disappointing box office debut, and because of this, there won't likely be a third film in the series, according to producer Andrew Form.
In an interview with Collider, Form noted that while there likely won't be a follow-up to Out of the Shadows, he's not ruling out the possibility of a new TMNT film sometime in the future. "I don’t think there's Turtles 3, but I wouldn’t say there's never going to be another Turtles movie," he said.
Out of the Shadows made $35.3 million during its opening weekend in June, which was just over half of its predecessor's $65.6 million debut back in 2014.
With regard to the film's underwhelming performance in theaters, Form said they "were obviously surprised at the box office results," and "felt so good about [the] material, and for some reason it did not find the audience that the first movie found." He said they discuss the film "all the time" and try to figure out why it wasn't it success, but ultimately "cannot put [their] finger on what happened."
That said, Form said they did learn that "you can’t just add characters to a movie and expect that to be what's fresh," noting that with a sequel, "you have to give the audience something that's really new and fresh. Maybe just adding characters from the canon, that wasn’t enough."
