A rare Pokemon card, called Pikachu illustrator, went up for auction this week on Heritage Auctions and the site expects it to sell for $50,000 USD.
Pikachu Illustrator (pictured above) was never sold as part of the Pokemon Trading Card Game. The card was created exclusively as a prize for winners of an illustration contest in the January 1998 issue of CoroCoro Comic, a monthly manga magazine published in Japan.
Only 39 cards were released at the time, making it one of the rarest cards in the Pokemon TCG. The artwork for it was created by Atsuko Nishida. The Pikachu Illustrator auction ends for this rare card on November 19.
Last week, the Pokemon Company and jeweler Ginza Tanaka teamed up to create a solid gold Pikachu card that is being sold for 216,000 yen (USD$2081). The card was created to commemorate 20 years of the Pokemon TCG.
