Tom Hardy to Play Al Capone for Fantastic 4 Director

Currently in pre-production.

Fonzo, the upcoming film from Josh Trank, will star Tom Hardy as the infamous gangster Al Capone, it was announced today.

Hardy, who received an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in The Revenant, was previously attached to play Capone in the unproduced film Cicero.

Here's the official synopsis for Fonzo: "Once a ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Alfonse [sic] Capone was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore. At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Alfonse’s mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life."

When we he had a chance to speak with the actor a few years ago about portraying the most feared gangster in American history, he called the opportunity a "tremendous honor" and one that he takes "very seriously."

Capone wouldn't be the first real-life criminal Hardy will have portrayed. The actor previously portrayed London's twin mobsters the Krays in Legend as well as the fearsome longtime prisoner Charlie Bronson.

Trank, who directed Fantastic Four and Chronicle, wrote Fonzo and is also on board to direct the film, which is currently in pre-production. Addictive Pictures' Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder are attached to produce, as well as Lawrence Bender.

Fonzo is one of many projects Hardy has on the horizon, as the actor is set to star in Christopher Nolan’s WWII epic Dunkirk, as well as a new series from Ridley Scott called Taboo.
