Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel - How to Defeat the Final Boss

The Boss Sister Friede (as well as Father Ariandel) serve as the final of two Bosses you will face in Dark Souls 3's Ashes of Ariandel DLC.

To engage in combat with Sister Friede, you can't just attack her in her chapel - as she'll just disappear. Instead, you must brave the Snowy Mountain Pass to enter the rotting basement of the chapel, and find a lever that lowers a set of stairs next to Friede leading to the imprisoned Father Ariandel - only then will she take matters into her own hands.

Even with her many phases that will take some endurance to master, Sister Friede is fairly frail as far as bosses go. Being humanoid, she can be staggered with big attacks, and as she is only wearing cloth, big strikes can take a lot off of her health - but the many phases you go through will make her seem much tougher.

Sister Friede Video Guide

The fight with Sister Friede is comprised of three phases: Sister Friede, Father Ariandel and Friede, and Blackflame Friede.

This part is fairly straightforward, but it can be easy to make simple mistakes that will cost you in the long run - you’ll want to save your Estus for the other phases, which means you’ll need to pay close attention to Sister Friede’s attacks and how they work. Father Ariandel won’t be joining in this part, so ignore him completely, and focus on not losing sight of Friede. She only wears cloth, and thankfully can be staggered and even backstabbed if you can get behind her in lucky moments.

Her most basic attacks when you are close enough will be several frost-laced scythe swings, usually two or three, with a pause allowing for a counter attack. Things get a little more difficult when she goes into a stance holding the scythe behind her. From this stance she can do a few moves: The most dangerous will have her dragging the scythe blade along the ground like a hockey stick - before launching it up into the air. If you get caught in this attack be prepared to take massive damage as you are sliced into the air, then pulled back down. She may also jump into the air for a leaping slash that will often output an area of frostbite you’ll need to move away from.

Possibly the most dangerous and annoying move will come at a distance, where she will sweep her scythe aside before turning invisible and leaping to a random nearby location. When this happens, you will only have a few moments before you can hear her readying her attack - at which point she will race towards you to swing the scythe up in her massive damaging attack move - only you won’t be able to see this version until it’s too late. The best ways to counter this are to find her before she can unleash it as she will spend several moments winding up the attack - and if you can get close enough her invisibility will fade. If you see her preparing to turn invisible - quickly race to her and she will become visible before jumping away, which should be easier to track as she lands before disappearing again - or you can look for the small cloud that forms from her landing. When you find her, give her your strongest attack if you have the time before she winds up her attack. Keep doing this, and you should be able to deplete her health bar.

Because nothing is ever that easy, Father Ariandel will go into a rage at seeing Sister Friede fall - and bring her back to life with new and improved abilities - and will join the battle as well. The good news is they both share one health bar, and it doesn’t matter who you attack so long as you press the attack. The bad news is that you’ll constantly have to keep your eyes on both attackers, as each can deal a lot of damage if you aren’t prepared.

Father Ariandel has fairly simple yet powerful attacks. He’ll alternate between holding the bowl high before spewing a large blast of flame breath that will move from side to side, and afterwards start yelling and crawling towards you bashing the bowl down with surprising length. He’ll reach forward several times before stopping for a moment, and either continuing smashing the bowl down - or if you attack him for too long, he may take a large swipe with the bowl - or douse himself with the bowl’s contents to leak fire everywhere before exploding in a massive fireball.

Sister Friede will now constantly swipe her scythe to send a long wedge of frostbite toward you that will quickly build your frostbite meter - before the wedge explodes into ice that will deal incredible damage. Between this and Father Ariandel, you’ll have to be constantly moving at all times. If you get close, Sister Friede will re-use her slash attacks up close, and may end with a powerful attack. The good news is that she won’t be using her invisible high-damage attack - but the bad news is she will still turn invisible briefly to find a location to build up a large heal for the both of them. If you see her vanish, keep circling the arena until you spot a large glow of golden light - and race forward to attack her at all costs, lest she undo all the damage you’ve been dealing.

Between the Sister and the Father, it’s really up to you who to focus attacks on. Father Ariandel is usually open to attacks after he slams his away across the arena, and Friede only has the one easy to avoid frost attack from a distance. However Friede is equally open to counter attacks both when healing and after her close up slashes - so long as you know where Father Ariandel is and which move he is preparing to do. If he’s closing in with his slamming attack or preparing to breathe fire - it’s time to keep moving. However, if he’s dousing fire on himself farther away, you’ll have time to engage Friede directly. This is a pretty tough phase since you have to deal with multiple targets - but you must learn it and practice it so that you can beat the both of them and have Estus to spare. Equally important is managing your frostbite: You’ll take in a lot of frost just trying to get away from her attacks, but if you can get distance on the both of them, you should be able to consume Rime-blue Moss Clumps to get rid of any lingering frostbite. Killing the two of them will prompt a one time drop from Father Ariandel giving you a Titanite Slab, however….

Not content to just die already, The ashes of Father Ariandel and Sister Friede will combine to revive Sister Friede as Blackflame Friede, and she will get up once more with a full health bar, a second scythe, and new and even more deadly attacks.

The first and most powerful is usually the one she starts with - flying into the air with her blackflame scythe before slamming down creating a large path of blackflame in your direction - which you will need to expertly dodge. She’ll also be much more aggressive creating frostbite than in the previous phase, shooting out thin lines of frostbite in quick succession that will explode fairly fast - or even flying into the air without the blackflame to slam down creating frostbite all around her. If she goes into her stance and leaps into the air - dodge her downward strike, as it creates a large area of frost that will explode if you are stunned by blocking the attack.

An even deadlier attack comes when she will go into a dual-scythe stance and ready them in front of her - before dashing forth in a spin wreathed in cyclones. If you do not dodge this attack in time, she will hit you before grabbing you from behind and slice open your neck with both scythes - dealing a massive amount of damage. She also puts a new spin on her invisible attack - jumping once to send out a trail of frostbite before jumping again and repeating the attack, and jumping once more to charge up her blackflame scythe attack. This is a lot tricker to counter with the room being larger - so as soon as she tries to disappear, race towards the first frostbite attack to try and find her before she can jump away - and track her each time she jumps to find her before she can charge up. If you are running out of time, it is best to go on the defensive and get ready to dodge her final attack rather than wasting stamina sprinting around wildly.

She’s still quite susceptible to being staggered by big attacks, so be sure to get in a few where you can when she gets up close and personal - blocking her swipes if you have the stamina for it, and not dodging too early when she winds up for a longer finisher. The key is patience - many of her attacks that summon frost don’t leave her open to melee retaliation due to the frost around her, but some of her regular scythe attacks, and even dodging her spinning grab move will leave her open.

As long as you choose carefully when to attack and when to wait it out, you can deal good damage and probably even stagger her with a weapon that hits hard enough. When she falls, she will drop the Soul of Sister Friede, and you adventure in the painted world of Ariandel will be at an end. Congratulations!
