Top 10 Scariest Pokemon

If you weren't already terrified of Litwick, Parasect and Yamask, prepare to have your Poke-loving mind blown.

Pokemon by their nature are supposed to be cute creatures that act as allies to their human trainers, but dig beneath the surface and there's a lot of darkness to the adorable pocket monsters.

In the spirit of Halloween, we put together the 10 most terrifying Pokemon based on the information provided in the games and TV show. Based on this list, children in the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos -- and likely Alola -- regions would do better running from these Pokemon than trying to catch them.

Kadabra

Released Generation 1

Kadabra is a powerful psychic Pokemon that was introduced back in Generation 1, but its origin story has evolved over the years. Despite the fact it is an evolution of Abra, the Pokedex entries in both Emerald and FireRed show that Kadabra actually has a much more human origin. Both of those entries say Kadabra was actually once a boy with psychic abilities, who then transformed into a Pokemon.

Phantump

Released Generation 6

Phantump’s Pokedex entry says it’s possessed by the spirits of children who died while lost in the forest, making this one incredibly disturbing and sad Pokemon. It also makes catching one sort of weird. Sorry, Phantump.

Cubone

Released Generation 1

Poor Cubone is wearing the skull of its dead mother — which probably explains why it cries all the time. When Cubone evolves into Marowak, it finally overcomes its grief — only to be strong and tough enough to defeat any enemy in its path. With bones.

Parasect

Released Generation 1

Paras is seemingly the perfect embodiment of a symbiotic relationship. The mushrooms on top of the insect's back allow both to live in harmony... until Paras evolves into Parasect. Then the mushroom parasite completely takes over the insect's body, resulting in Parasect's eyes going a blank, zombie-like white. And the cycle never ends, either: as Crystal's Pokedex entry says, when there's nothing for the mushroom to extract from the bug, it leaves spores on the insect's eggs, to infect another generation from birth.

Litwick

Released Generation 5

Litwick looks cute, but that’s exactly how it gets you. Rumor has it Litwick lures unsuspecting people and Pokemon while pretending to be a guiding light, then leeches their life force… which it then burns for fuel.

Cofagrigus

Released Generation 5

Besides literally looking like a sarcophagus, Cofagrigus is said to swallow anyone who gets too close — especially grave robbers — trap them inside its coffin body, and turn them into mummies. Stay far away.

Drifloon

Released Generation 4

According to English-language Pokedexes, children who hold onto Drifloon like a balloon might end up going missing. The Japanese games don’t sugarcoat it — they say that Drifloon intentionally takes kids to “the world of the dead.” So now we’re dealing with a Pokemon that literally guides children to their deaths.

Gourgeist

Released Generation 6

How nasty could a cute pumpkin Pokemon possibly be? Gourgeist just suffocates its victims with its arms, singing joyfully as they suffer — no big deal. As a bonus, anyone who hears Gourgeist’s song and lives ends up cursed.

Banette

Released Generation 3

Banette once was a doll that was abandoned by a child and turned into a Pokémon when it was literally possessed by pure hatred. Think about this little nightmare the next time you get rid of an old toy.

Yamask

Released Generation 5

Yamask is downright terrifying. Pokedex entries say Yamask is born from the spirits of the dead, who retain memories of their past lives… and the mask it carries was its face when it was human. It also looks at its old face and cries. If you’ve ever caught a Yamask, you’re basically holding the spirit of a dead person captive.
