In its three issues, Civil War II has seen a battle with Thanos, the death of two heroes, and an Avenger put on trial. During today's panel at Comic-Con, Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso assured fans that the event was just getting started.
“It’s gonna change the universe in a profound way. It will be a very different Marvel universe when it's over.”
While that's the obligatory catch phrase of literally every event comic ever written, Alonso and the rest of the panel, which included Director of Character and Content Development Sana Amanat and writers Matthew Rosenberg, Marc Guggenheim, G. Willow Wilson, and David Walker seemed certain they had enough tricks up their collective sleeves to make Civil War II a landmark comic event.

The majority of the panel focused on the various event tie-ins instead of the main storyline. In particular, Civil War II: Kingpin was a very popular topic, with writer Matthew Rosenberg on hand to dish about his current work as well as what lies ahead for Wilson Fisk.
“When the heroes are playing with each other, he sees an opportunity to reclaim his title as Kingpin of New York."
Axel Alonso added:
"Kingpin is going to be huge in the next couple years, keep an eye on him."
Once the four-part tie-in series is completed, Rosenberg will team with artist Ben Torres on an ongoing Kingpin series which will debut this fall. Rosenberg promised big things were ahead for the character, adding with a chuckle:
“He wants to make New York great again.”

In addition to the ongoing tie-ins, Marvel will publish two standalone issues that will explore the event's impact on the Marvel Universe as a whole. The Fallen #1, from writer Greg Pak and artist Mark Bagley and publishing on August 17th, will show how those closest to Bruce Banner/Hulk will deal with his death. Characters like the new Hulk (Amadeus Cho), Rick Jones, Thunderbolt Ross, and others will react to Bruce's death at the hands of Hawkeye.
Speaking of Clint Barton, his trial will receive a closer look in The Accused #1 from Marc Guggenheim with art by Ramon Bachs and Gerry Brown. However this issue won't focus on Hawkeye, but rather his prosecutor, Matt Murdock. Guggenheim, who has a law degree, was very excited to tackle a comic book courtroom drama.
"This issue explores trial of Hawkeye and how the verdict in Issue #4 [of Civil War II] comes about. What's it like for Matt to prosecute another hero? How did he get brought in?"
To anyone who worried that the issue would be just a bunch of talking heads, he offered this bit of assurance.
”There’s a fair amount of Daredevil punching and kicking.
The Accused #1 is set for publication on August 10th.
