Garry Marshall, Director of Pretty Woman, Dies


Marshall was 81.

Garry Marshall, director of Pretty Women and creator of beloved sitcom Happy Days, has passed away. He was 81.

Variety reports that Marshall passed away from complications associated with phenomena.

Marshall began his career in the early '60s writing on popular sitcoms like I Love Lucy and The Dick Van Dyke Show before making a name for himself with his own creations, Happy Days,  Laverne and Shirly, and Mork and Mindy. His first movie was Young Doctors In Love in 1982, and he followed it with early hits The Flamingo Kid (1984) and Beaches (1988).

His first blockbuster hit, however, was Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, in 1990. In subsequent years he had a string of other successes, including The Princess Diaries (2001), Valentine's Day (2010) and New Year's Eve (2011). Crucially, he was also once a guest voice on The Simpsons.

Marshall and his unique voice will be missed.
