Civil War 2 Starts with a Pair of Devastating Twists

Tragedy has struck Marvel's heroes.

Marvel Comics promised a big shocker in Civil War II by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Marquez, and with today’s premiere issue they made good on their word, and then some.

The issue starts with all of Marvel’s assembled heroes (Avengers, Inhumans, X-Men) taking down a Celestial Destructor (an insanely powerful monster from another dimension), and it’s revealed that they were only able to do so with the help of Ulysses, a new Inhuman who has the power to predict the future.

Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers wants to continue to use his gift to stop threats before they happen (like in Minority Report), whereas Iron Man aka Tony Stark admits it helped against the Destructor but is against the idea of imprisoning someone before they commit a crime.

Three weeks later, Ulysses has a vision of Thanos attacking Earth in search of the Cosmic Cube, so Carol assembles her team of Ultimates to take him down before he can make his move. The battle, shown in full in Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day issue, ends with War Machine aka James Rhodes taking a lethal blow from the villain.

Also, during the fight one of War Machine’s missiles misfired right into She-Hulk, leaving her in critical condition.

Back at the Triskelion where the Ultimates have their headquarters, Tony arrives, and given that Rhodey was his best friend, he’s understandably upset. When he learns that Rhodey was only on that mission in the first place because the team listened to Ulysses (against Tony’s advice), he gets even more enraged at Carol. But Carol fires back, saying that Rhodey was a soldier who fell in battle, and given that she was in a romantic relationship with him, she had the insight to know that he wouldn’t have done anything different given the chance. Despite the devastating loss they both share, she’s still for pre-emptive justice.

Tony takes off to go find Ulysses so no one can “play god” again.

Before Carol can go after him, She-Hulk awakens in her hospital bed and grabs her hand. With her dying breath, she tells Carol to keep on fighting for the future.

Marvel promised a big death in Civil War 2, but they went above and beyond, killing two superheroes and fracturing the superhero community down the middle, all in the first issue.
