How to Evolve The Toughest Pokemon in Go

This page contains information on how to evolve your pokemon in Pokemon Go.

To evolve your Pokemon you must have the specific type and necessary number of Candy, which will enable the evolve button found on the specific Pokemon's page, below their name and stats.

It's important to note that you'll find more powerful pokemon - that is, pokemon with a higher CP rating - when your trainer is a higher level. Wait until you've caught a pokemon you want to evolve at a higher level before spending the necessary candies to evolve it. You can also use a service like the pogotooklit's Evolution Calculator or PokeGo's Evolution CP Calculator to see what your pokemon will evolve into and how high it's CP rating will be.

Evolving your Pokemon is a sure-fire way to drastically increase your Pokemon's CP in one go, but this could require quite a few captures. This Pidgeotto below needs 50 Pidgey Candy to evolve. Since each Pidgey capture awards you with three Candy and each transfer with one, you need to catch 13 Pokemon from the Pidgey evolution line before you'll be able to evolve it.

Different Pokemon require different amounts of candy to evolve, although subsequent evolutions will still require the base type's candy. The easiest Pokemon to evolve are Pidgeys, Weedles, and Caterpies - who only cost 12 candies each to evolve, while Magikarp, needs a huge number of Candy before it will evolve. To get a mighty Gyarados you'll need 400 Magikarp Candy!

Evolving your Pokemon has a few effects besides making it stronger. Your newly evolved Pokemon will be fully healed, and its moves will be randomly re-selected. Because of this, don't choose which Pokemon you want to evolve based on the moves it knows. They'll probably change anyway! Also note that the CP of the evolved Pokemon will be at the same point along the white bar as it was for the unevolved version, only the CP will have increased to a new scale. For the best and strongest results, try evolving Pokemon that are already far along on the CP scale, in the 80-90% range, as they'll evolve into an extremely strong Pokemon based on your trainer's level.

Additionally, evolving your Pokemon grants you 500 XP. Evolving it into a Pokemon you havent caught before? You get an extra 500 XP bonus--a total of 1000 XP for your Trainer.

The Lucky Egg doubles all XP earned for 30 minutes! One of the best ways to level fast involves using Lucky Eggs to double your normal 500 XP reward from evolving to 1000XP for each Pokemon you level up.

To really reap in the benefits, you should capture a lot of common Pokemon, like Pidgey or Caterpie, that require relatively few Candy to evolve. This has been referred to as the Pidgey Exploit, as Pidgey are very common for some people, and only cost 12 Candy to evolve for 1000 XP. Even better: If you're evolving a Pokemon into one you haven't caught before, you'll get 2,000 XP!

The Step-by-Step Process to the "Pidgey Exploit":

  • Step 1: Don't Transfer Pokemon

Collect easy-to-catch-and-evolve Pokemon, like Pidgey. Pidgey are easy to come by and only cost 12 Pidgey Candy to evolve. The more the better. Save them for a Lucky Egg evolution binge. Favorite all the Pokemon you want to evolve with a star to keep things in order.

If you have Pokemon that you know will evolve into something you haven't caught before, save them for your Lucky Egg XP spree, too.

  • Step 2: Plan for After Your Evolution Spree

You have 30 minutes to exploit the Lucky Egg, so only use it when you can also go out and catch Pokemon, using a lure or incense.

  • Step 3: Activate the Lucky Egg

You will now get double XP for every thing you do for 30 minutes.

  • Step 4: Get to Evolving!
  • Step 5: Use your remaining time to catch Pokemon

As mentioned above, if you have any time left over after your evolving-spree, go out and attach a Lure Module to a PokeStop, activate an Incense, and get to catching. If you have the resources and are in a spot with multiple PokeStops next to each other, use a few Lure Modules to maximize the amount of Pokemon that appear! You can do this same thing pre-Lucky Egg as a way to stock up on Pokemon and Poke Balls, too.
