Wayward Pines: "Blood Harvest" Review

"The only good abbie is a dead abbie."

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

The second episode of Season 2 was a little anemic compared to the premiere, but I guess that's fitting since "Blood Harvest" was mainly focused on the town's lack of food. While the beginning and end were considerably more action-packed, the middle felt more in keeping with Season 1's lackadaisical pace, which offered a mix of both tedium and intrigue.

The beginning was probably the most exciting part of this episode, as the First Gen military arrived at the crashed truck, where the abbies were literally piling up to get inside the wall. It definitely seems like the creatures are picking up some new tricks -- which makes sense, given their evolutionary advantage as hunters. Perhaps they're not as predictable as Pilcher thought.

But again, most of this episode was centered around Theo discovering and coming to terms with the truth of Wayward Pines, which is where things got somewhat repetitive. Obviously the nature of Theo's character makes it impossible to gloss over the reality of the situation, but it was still pretty boring in the context of this episodes. His scenes with Rebecca were easily the most vexing, as Rebecca took it upon herself to alleviate Theo's paranoia and field questions about the state of things.

However, the one interesting wrinkle here was Theo butting heads with the young Jason, who we got a better sense of this week. In addition to proving how inexperienced he is at leading the town, Theo was able to test the waters of his own authority, learning just how invaluable he is. ("You think I can't do your job? That's fine. But we both know you can't do mine.") Now it seems like Theo may set his sights on Carrie, who could potentially convince Jason to see the error of his ways.

Other character moments this week ranged from "filler" to "good." Of course, the most notable B story here was Ben's. Honestly, I don't think his death hit as hard as it could have, especially considering how early we are into Season 2. Personally, I felt like his character had more to offer, but clearly the writers are passing the torch onto Theo now.

Still, Ben's message to Jason at the end here seemed to hammer home what Theo was alluding to throughout this episode: Jason's dictatorship is doomed to fail. Meanwhile, I'll be curious to see how Theresa (!) factors into all this now that Ben is dead. Her handful of scenes were understandably Ben-centric, but that could quickly get tiresome now that we know her attempts to rally a rescue team would be useless. If nothing else, she appears to have incited some doubt in the First Gen soldiers.

Djimon Hounsou's CJ Mitchum also made his debut this week, albeit a soft one. Honestly, there's not much to say about his character just yet -- which is a shame, because I felt like he could have made a real splash during the harvest mission, and that unfortunately turned out to be less thrilling than it sounded. Same goes for the abbie cadaver scene, as Megan not-so-subtly revealed there were three live abbies locked away somewhere. (Setup alert!)

The Verdict

"Blood Harvest" definitely pumped the breaks on last week's forward momentum, but there were still some good moments to come out of it. Ben's demise and Theo's paranoia weren't particularly strong, but the abbie scenes and Theo's friction with Jason were both entertaining. Overall, this entry wasn't as captivating as "Enemy Lines," but it was still fairly enjoyable.
