Responding to the way his comments have been interpreted during a recent podcast appearance, The Batman director Matt Reeves has clarified whether the solo Batman movie is part of the DC Extended Universe.
In a series of tweets, Reeves wrote on Twitter, "Just to be clear: Of COURSE Batman will be part of the D.C. Universe. Batman will be BATMAN..." Reeves was responding to reports about his appearance on the podcast The Business, in which he said that he and DC agreed upon the idea that "[the film is] a standalone, this isn’t part of the extended universe."
Reeves continued in his series of tweets to say that his statement at the time was referring to the idea that this would be a film focused on Batman and not necessarily his connections to the larger DCEU.
In two additional tweets, he wrote: "In my comments from a while back about not being part of the DCEU, I was talking about The Batman being a story specifically about Batman... ...not about the others in the Universe. That it wouldn't be filled with cameos servicing other stories -- that it would be a BATMAN story."
Reeves' podcast appearance had been recorded prior to San Diego Comic-Con, during which Warner Bros. and DC unveiled its upcoming DCEU slate, which included The Batman. However as Reeves' comments began to spread, they became of particular interest because of the recent news regarding a new DC Film imprint that would allow the studio to tell stories unrestrained by current work being done to continue the DCEU canon. News of that imprint also revealed that a Joker origin film is in the works that would see a different actor take on the role of the clown prince than Jared Leto, who currently stars as the Joker in the DCEU.
Rumors have swirled that Batman star Ben Affleck was looking to exit the DCEU, though the actor brushed off the reports onstage at Comic-Con during the studio's showing.
Yesterday, news also broke that a DCEU movie with the Joker and Harley Quinn, featuring Jared Leto and Margot Robbie, is in the works.
Shazam is the next movie in the DCEU to begin shooting, scheduled to get underway later this year, with a possible 2019 release.
