Halo: 343 Industries Working with VR / AR for Future Titles

Mixed reality is coming to Halo - but in what form?

Microsoft has announced - albeit in a fairly low-key fashion - that it is partnering with 343 Industries "to bring future Halo experiences into mixed reality".

The news comes buried towards the bottom of a more general report from Microsoft technical fellow Alex Kipman, providing an update on the company's mixed reality services as a whole. Among general information about its range of headsets and mixed reality-ready PCs, there's a lengthy list of 'first wave' content partners who will be working with Microsoft on "mixed reality experiences" - including Sony and Hulu, among others - with Microsoft's partnership with 343 Industries given pride of place.

For now, that's all the news we have. "We are not providing specifics right now," continues Kipman, "but it is going to be a lot of fun to work with [343]."

The wording here - "[bringing] future Halo experiences into mixed reality" - could imply that these will be additional mixed reality experiences within forthcoming games, rather than standalone. A counterpoint, however, would be that Phil Spencer has previously said the company's work with VR is focused on PC rather than Xbox "right now".

Microsoft's "mixed reality" programme encompasses both AR (in the form of HoloLens) and VR. HoloLens demonstrations have included a Halo experience in the past, but 343's next work could well take the form of VR.

Microsoft promises that more details about the future direction of its mixed reality partnerships will be coming soon.

The article also reveals that Microsoft's mixed reality headsets will support SteamVR games - a major extra source of content for the newest VR platform.
