The Walking Dead: Our World is Pokemon Go, With Zombies

Pika-chewing your arm off.

In addition to Robert Kirkman's original much-loved comic book series, two TV shows, and a well-received episodic video game adaptation courtesy of Telltale Games, it appears that the world of The Walking Dead will soon be expanding in something of an unexpected direction with the introduction of a new augmented-reality game for iOS and Android.

Details are still hazy, other than an announcement video which you can see below:

Although the trailer doesn't showcase any gameplay details and should be considered a concept more than anything, it does appear that The Walking Dead: Our World will share Pokemon Go's reliance on location-based gameplay. During the trailer Rick, Daryl and Michonne - fan-favourites from the AMC TV show - appear to provide assistance although it isn't made clear how this might be implemented in the game.

It's also not clear how players will accrue weapons and other loot. Since no information has been released we have no word on micro-transactions or the like but it's a fairly safe bet that at least some of these items will be found through exploring the world. Pokemon Go uses Poke Stops to allow players to gather useful items; it's not a huge leap to imagine that another location-based AR game would go the same route (although presumably less adorable).

Speculation is all we have for the moment until more information is released. The Walking Dead: Our World is the result of a collaboration between AMC and Next Games. The pair previously worked together on The Walking Dead: No Man's Land, a mobile strategy game.

The Walking Dead returns to TV Sunday, October 22, and it's probably pretty safe to say that more news will have arrived by then. In other interactive zombie news, Telltale recently concluded the third season of their episodic companion game to the series - we loved the focus on "allegiance, love and family" - and recently announced that the fourth season, coming next year, will be the last.
