Overwatch Punishment, Reporting Improvements to Come

"We're working hard to make changes. I hope you all do too."

Overwatch is due a series of big changes for player reporting and punishments including possible email notifications, less silences, and generally harsher penalties all round.

Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan responded to concerned fan threads on the Overwatch forums today, giving some new details on the Overwatch team's long-term plans when it comes to player behavior.

Kaplan said, initially, the team is, “… re-evaluating every punishment,” including increasing suspension length across the board, removing silences in favor of suspensions and also testing a new email notification system. This system will, “let you know when someone you've reported has been actioned,” hopefully meaning fans won’t feel like their feedback is falling on deaf ears. Season 5 boosters will also be getting bans imminently, Kaplan said, noting that a developer update regarding these changes will air soon. In fact, it's already been recorded.

The next step in Blizzard's plans will be to ensure repeat competitive offenders will be banned much more quickly and even permanently if they have been banned after a certain number of seasons. Kaplan added “we’re going to be way more aggressive with boosting/throwing or any sort of SR manipulation” and “We have some very smart people who are getting very good at detecting this behavior and we are actively building systems (and punishments) around SR abuse.” An in-game notification systems is also in the works as the team also continues to work on a new set of punishments that will cause repeat offenders to essentially "strike out" of the game,

Finally, Kaplan expressed his disappointment with how many Blizzard resources were being spent policing the community. He explained, “We really want to work on systems that encourage positive behavior and reward good players. It really bums us out to spend so much time punishing people for being bad sports.” He also called upon the community for their help in the issue, saying that, “this is an 'us, the OW community problem' and not just an 'OW team problem.'”

“For better or for worse, we're in this together," Kaplan said.

This announcement comes hot off the heels of Jeff announcing some serious Mercy and D.Va changes, the new Junkertown map and Deathmatch modes hitting the PTR and Kaplan dealing some serious sass at one banned community member.
