The Best In Aussie Esports This Week

A collection of IGN's favourite matches from Aussie Esports this week.

There was some old school action this week in Aussie esports as StarCraft legends mOOnGLaDe and Legionnaire clashed for an exhibition match at the WCS ANZ Finals. Around the country the League of Legends Split 2 Gauntlet found us a contender for the Finals next week and Blank Esports kicked off their campaign in Season 2 of the Overwatch Pacific Championship.

StarCraft: Remastered - mOOnGLaDe vs Legionnaire

A friendly show match between two Aussie esports legends took place at the WCS ANZ Finals over the weekend, as mOOnGLaDe and Legionnaire collided in StarCraft Remastered. The second match was a lot closer than the first, but in the end both games in this best of three went the way of Legionnaire, who showed he never really forgot those Protoss skills. Watch the moment that sealed mOOnGLaDe's fate below, as Legionnaire's Storms shredded his blockade and provided unfettered access to the map.

StarCraft 2 - WCS ANZ Finals

StarCraft Remastered might have been the highlight for old school guys like me, but StarCraft 2 put on a show this weekend as well. The 2017 WCS ANZ Finals saw eight of Australia's best StarCraft 2 players compete for one of two slots at the WCS Montreal Finals, and it was as close as it could be. Seither dropped out early to MightyKiwi (from New Zealand, unsurprisingly) and fell to the loser's bracket. From there he fought his way through MeomaikA from Vietnam, iaguz, Yours and MightKiwi again before he squared off against Probe in the finals. Probe took an early 2-0 lead in the best of five, and things looked bleak — but Seither managed to pull off the reverse sweep, winning game five with a cheesy Siege Tank play that Probe wasn't able to stop. Watch it below.

League of Legends - OPL Split 2 Gauntlet Series

The OPL Split Gauntlet dominated the weekend as four of the best teams in Australia battled it out on the field of justice to determine who would face down the Dire Wolves for a place at the League of Legends Worlds. The weekend kicked off with SIN Gaming taking on Avant Garde in a grudge match identical to the start of the gauntlet in Split one. This match-up was a slobber-knocker as both teams fought for every millimetre of map presence. Avant had SIN on the ropes when they took the series to 2-1, but SIN buckled down and battled their way back in to win 3-2 — game five was an utter blowout. Watch the turning point in game 4 for SIN below.

The second showdown saw the Chiefs out for revenge — in Split 1 in this exact situation, SIN Gaming knocked them out of the tournament. That wasn't the case this time though — the Chiefs were far too dominant, and they seemed to have answers for every question SIN posed. The games were really close, but the Chiefs were too good on the day, winning 3-0. Watch Raes pick up a Pentakill in game 2.

The third and final gauntlet match-up pit the Chiefs against their long time rivals, Legacy Esports. Legacy vs Chiefs is almost a Derby match at this point, it's a tale as old as time. And as it has happened in so many Finals matches before, the Chiefs played beautifully as they defeated Legacy 3 - 0. The first game was a blowout, but it just seemed to wake Legacy up. Game 2 was much closer as both teams traded back and forth. Interrupted for a little bit, eventually the Chiefs became too powerful for Legacy to deal with. Game three was a bit of a rout as the Chiefs pushed with the Rift Herald early and ran away with the game as a result. With that, the Chiefs take on the Dire Wolves this coming weekend!

Overwatch - OPC Season 2

Blank Esports had a bye for the first week of the OPC's Season 2, so their first games were this week — four games back-to-back. Their new look roster — with pickups Hus and HooWoo from MasterMinds GC — won three of the four, dropping to Hong Kong Attitude on day two but otherwise representing well. Watch Hus go huge on Doomfist to help secure a win for Blank against M17 below.

If there are any fantastic highlights from the AU scene you think we missed above, drop me a line on twitter or tell us in the comments below. I'm all over the good stuff though, so we'll see you next week for more!
