Nintendo has announced that it will be bringing its social networking service Miiverse to an end on Tuesday, November 7 at 10pm PT / Wednesday, November 8 at 1am ET / 6am GMT / 5pm AEST.
The news isn't entirely unexpected; late last year Nintendo announced that it was ending production for the Wii U. With Miiverse being exclusive to the Wii U and 3DS family of systems, plus Nintendo's introduction of the Nintendo Switch Online Service for Switch players, it isn't surprising that the console maker is looking to tidy up its online functionality.
For anyone worried about the content they have posted to Miiverse, fear not! Nintendo has confirmed in a post on its website that between now and the end of the Miiverse service, your online posts and screenshots will be available to download to a PC. Further information is available through the Internet Browser version of Miiverse - available here - by clicking on the "Post History Download Option". A linked Nintendo account is required, and all requests must be submitted before the closure of the Miiverse service.
The Miiverse service was first introduced to the Wii U in 2012, before expanding to the 3DS family of systems and acquiring an online portal in 2013. It provides players with a social networking space in which they can post messages and join discussions, as well as joining game communities and interacting in ways specific to certain games.
There is currently no word on what online functionality for the 3DS systems will look like moving forward, but we'll keep you posted.
