Famed horror director Tobe Hooper has died. He was 74.
The director, best known for his work on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist, died in Sherman Oaks, California, Variety reports. According to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, Hooper died of natural causes.
In addition to directing the hit 1974 film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre—a favorite of Stanley Kubrick's—Hooper helmed the 1982 horror classic Poltergeist, which was written and produced by Steven Spielberg and ended up being one of the ten highest-grossing films of that year.
He also directed a more comedic sequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which was released in 1986, as well as Lifeforce and Invaders from Mars. Hooper's directorial work also includes the 1979 miniseries adaptation of the Stephen King novel Salem's Lot. Djinn, a supernatural horror film about an Emirati couple, was released in 2013 and serves as the director's final film.
Hooper is survived by his two sons.
