The Hitman's Bodyguard topped what has been the domestic box office's lowest-grossing weekend in sixteen years.
Director Patrick Hughes' action-comedy earned an estimated $10.1 million in its second weekend. The Hitman's Bodyguard opened in first place last week, earning just over $21 million in its domestic debut. Comparatively speaking, the box office leader this time last year was Don't Breathe, which earned over $24 million in its late August debut.
This weekend's box office results have proven to be the worst for Hollywood since September 21-23, 2001. While the impact of Hurricane Harvey, as well as competition from the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match can (in part) be attributed to the underwhelming box office results, it's difficult to gauge the extent to which they were a factor.
New releases, including Leap! and Birth of the Dragon, certainly didn't help bolster this weekend's box office results. The former, a French animated adventure about an orphan girl who dreams of becoming a dancer in Paris, debuted in third with an estimated $5 million. Meanwhile, Birth of the Dragon, an action drama about a young Bruce Lee in 1960s San Francisco, debuted in eighth, earning an estimated $2.5 million.
This weekend also saw the limited release of James Cameron's 4K 3D conversion of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The film earned an estimated $560,000 across 563 theater locations.
Next weekend doesn't look to be particularly promising either. However, shortly after Labor Day weekend, Stephen King's IT offers a glimmer of hope, as the film is tracking to have the biggest Stephen King movie opening ever when it debuts on September 8.
