DC's Head Honchos Praise Its Rebirth

Talking Superman, Batman, and Scooby Doo

Today's Meet The Co-Publishers panel, hosted by Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, was a light hearted and laid back celebration of all things DC Comics.

The event began with both men gushing over the current state of the DC line, which has seen a surge in polarity thanks to Rebirth. DiDio reflected on how much has changed since last year, when the company was in the middle of their big move from New York to Los Angeles, and celebrated the fact that the Rebirth books are attracting old and new fans alike.

He also praised DC’s partnership with Hanna Barbera and how those books, in particular Scooby Apocalypse, are helping expand DC’s reach.

“We know one size does not fit all.”

It was also revealed that Jim Lee is such a huge Scooby Doo fan that he once cosplayed as Velma. He immediately regretted sharing that information with the public.

The two then opened the floor to questions from the fans. One very enthusiastic, young fan asked about incorporating characters from other imprints, like Wildstorm, into the current DC universe. Lee promised a huge announcement concerning Wildstorm would be forthcoming at New York Comic-Con. They also mentioned that there are plenty of fan favorites from the DC universe, like Wally West and Ambush Bug, for whom plans are being put into place. The pair then invited the young fan to join them onstage for the rest of the panel.

One fan praised the decision to return the Action Comics and Detective Comics books to their “legacy” numbering. DiDio described the prospect of another Action or Detective Comics #1 as “gimmicky”, and felt it was the right thing to do. He also joked:

“Jim Lee has a plan to draw 1,000 covers for the 1,000th issue of Action Comics.”

When asked if they thought they would be following suit with any other comic lines, DiDio said he didn't think that was going to happen.

Finally, they were asked what they’re favorite moment from the still-young Rebirth movement was. Lee mentioned Wally West’s appearance in DC Universe Rebirth #1 and the subsequent emotional outpouring from fans, saying:

“We knew it would be a big deal, but it was much bigger than we expected.”

As for DiDio:

"[New 52] let us know we’d lost some fans, so the response to Rebirth means we’ve got them back. We love all the questions, it means we’re doing it right. That's what we want to keep doing. Keep you here, keep you excited”
