Preacher: "Sundowner" Review

Test your might. Motel fight!

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

So how about the opening 15 minutes or so of this week’s Preacher!?

After the pilot, Preacher had slowed down in subsequent episodes -- occasional chainsaw confrontation aside -- but this episode remedied that in a huge way, with that wonderfully twisted motel fight between Jesse, Fiore, DeBlanc and a Seraphim angel (and then Cassidy). The fact that three of these four would simply be resurrected – or, to be more specific, replicated, while their previous corpse remained – when they were killed was put to amazingly fun, macabre use, as the bodies kept piling up, but everyone just kept coming back.

From Cassidy mucking it all up by killing the Seraphim when they almost had her trapped, to the visual of the room simply covered in blood by the end – not to mention that great shot pulling back through the hole in the wall as the fight continued – this was a completely over the top, outrageous scenario that felt incredibly Preacher in all the right ways.

Plus, the fight came right after Jesse was told the full truth about what exactly was inside him - Genesis (loved Cassidy’s “Like the bloody band?” line), the all-powerful child of an angel and demon. Jesse now having this knowledge is a big shift towards Preacher moving more towards its comic book plotline, even as there’s an intriguing issue to deal with first, which is Jesse not wanting to give Genesis up and, in fact, getting power hungry and even megalomaniacal, seeing how he can make others do what he wants.

I was worried the subplot with Eugene making some new friends was going down a predictable path where they were faking it and led him into a terrible prank, but for now, it seems legitimate. And his moment of happiness, watching them set off fireworks in that tunnel, led to an epiphany for him – going to Jesse and telling him he felt it was “cheating” to use his powers to make Mr. Loach or others do what he says.

Jesse’s fury at that was a well-done scene, as it was difficult to see Jesse be so harsh with Eugene - and it certainly didn’t end in a peaceful way, given it seems Jesse’s ability’s may be even more incredible than it seems (or was in the comics), if Eugene was actually physically sent to hell, after Jesse commanded it. Either way, it's another example of how things are escalating here, as Season 1 heads into its final act.

The Verdict

While this episode of Preacher couldn’t keep up the pace after that amazing, extended opening act, that material alone made this episode one of the best yet. And the situation with Jesse and Eugene is another huge event, on top of those burnt bodies of Quincannon’s victims the Mayor is helping cover up. On the quieter side, it was fun to see Tulip and Emily bond after Tulip’s outburst – and Emily’s line, “You broke my kid’s art thing!” felt wonderfully genuine.
