Just in time for Independence Day, Marvel is unveiling a very patriotic new Avengers team. Today they revealed (via The Washington Post) a new ongoing series entitled U.S.Avengers.
The new series will be written by Al Ewing and drawn by Paco Medina. The book will explore the next evolution of A.I.M. This former science-obsessed terrorist organization was recently taken over by Sunspot, who used A.I.M.'s resources and island hideout to build his own rogue group of Avengers. In U.S.Avengers, Sunspot takes that mission one step further by transforming A.I.M. into "American Intelligence Mechanics." This new group aims to fill the void left by the ailing S.H.I.E.L.D. and protect the United States in the most flamboyant way possible.
Along with the new AIM comes a new squad of Avengers. Joining Sunspot will be Cannonball, Squirrel Girl, Red Hulk, Pod, Danielle Cage (the adult version introduced in Ewing's Avengers: Ultron Forever mini-series) and a new Iron Patriot (the daughter of Tony Stark's late friend Ho Yinsen).
“We wanted a couple of members that’d speak to the U.S. in the title — hence super-scientist and supporting player Dr. Toni Ho stepping up to the main team as the new Iron Patriot, and General Ross waiting in the wings as the Red Hulk,” Ewing told The Washington Post. “And, of course, Danielle Cage, the Captain America of about thirty years in the future, who’ll be joining us for at least the first arc, as an enemy from her time comes to ours to stir up trouble.”
While it's obvious from the issue #1 cover alone that this new series will be fairly tongue-in-cheek, the British writer noted that he also wants to explore the concept of patriotism and how it can unite heroes of different nationalities and backgrounds. “I’m interested in America, in exploring the reasons I like your country and love your citizens,” Ewing said. “I don’t think patriotism should be uncritical or unthinking — we’re seeing in Britain where that leads, and it’s horrible. I’m afraid for us. But that urge to love and care for the home you’ve made, whether you were born to it or chose it or fled to it, that’s worth something. People use it as a weapon, but it’s also an engine that drives great positive change in our communities.”
Given that Ewing and Medina are currently collaborating on New Avengers and that this series features many of the same characters, we're assuming that U.S.Avengers will replace that series after Civil War II. However, Marvel has yet to comment on the future of New Avengers.
Look for U.S.Avengers #1 to hit stores in fall 2016.
