Power Rangers Team Teases Future of Movie Franchise

The story has only just begun.

Lionsgate's live-action Power Rangers movie, which opens in theaters today, will serve as the first in a six-film story that could also expand to even more films that aren't direct sequels.

Power Rangers producer Haim Saban recently told Variety they "already have a six-movie story arc" planned, which director Dean Israelite has since reaffirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Before he even signed on to helm the film, Israelite said the team at Saban Entertainment already "had a document that laid out six movies." He told EW he's confident there won't be a shortage of ideas for future films, saying, "We just haven’t had the time to really sit down and talk about the full six, but there's no doubt there is enough material for it, absolutely no doubt that the franchise could be that big."

The director also hinted at the possibility of there being even more than six movies, noting there's an incredible amount of material they could explore in prequel stories and non-direct sequels. Israelite specifically mentioned Bryan Cranston's Zordon and Elizabeth Banks' Rita Repulsa as characters that could be explored in side films that don't center around the central team of Mighty Morphin heroes.

"Zordon has a lovely, robust backstory, as does Rita. Imagine a prequel that was all about Zordon and Rita and their relationship and their Power Ranger team…" he suggested, noting these are just his ideas and the franchise "could go in a different direction." As far as returning to direct, Israelite said he'd "absolutely" like to helm future Power Rangers films.

With regard to what's in store for the direct followup to this year's release, a post-credits scene offers a clue about what the future holds.

Warning: Power Rangers spoilers below.

After the credits, viewers are treated to a scene where a teacher supervising detention calls out "Tommy Oliver" (aka the Green Ranger) multiple times to no response. A shot of a desk with a green jacket then follows, just before an explosion goes off and the screen cuts to black.

It's clear this scene is teasing the impending the debut of the Green Ranger, which has since been corroborated by a post on the film's official Twitter account:
