The Venom Movie Might Be a Horror Film

Will that dark symbiote get a dark movie?

The Venom movie is reportedly due to begin shooting this fall, and the Spider-man spin-off has been billed as an "Action / Horror / Sci-Fi" film.

According to casting website MyEntertainmentWorld (as spotted by Screen Rant), the shoot begins pretty soon, but that fits with the movie's scheduled release date of October 5, 2018.

Perhaps more interesting is the genre listed. "Action" is a no-brainer, while most superhero films can be said to be "Sci-Fi" in some sense - but it's "Horror" that stands out.

The recent trend of successful R-rated superhero films (see: Deadpool and Logan), and those films' relative separation from the movie universes they come from, mean this could be an indication that Sony will be trying something more adult of its own with Venom.

Reports have already emerged saying that Venom will be separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe despite Spider-man's recent merging with it, which could provide the platform for a more horror-led standalone movie.

We still know surprisingly little about the Venom movie, from director to cast, but we've got some ideas about how Spider-man could be incorporation into the spin-off.
